Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

Or....since she was buying such an item from Service Merchandise she was turned on. :)

lol tru dat

I started to ask why the hell they even sold those and who the hell would buy them there, but... I guess I'm not sure where I would expect the everyday working mom in 1984 to go to buy her home maintenance devices anyway. Walgreen's? At least at SM it's impersonal. Till some jackass in the back tries to help....

I could see it becoming the equivalent of North Chatt.

I don't know. I lived in North Chatt before the revival. Even then it had far more charm than South Knox. There is one small section off of Woodson that has some classic homes. But, for the most part, So Kno is rough. Lots of slums. It will take a lot of demo and starting over, where as N. Chatt was primarily renovation.

I agree with you about the residential quality. I was thinking more of the businesses along Frazier and the park. I would think something similar could happen on the south side of the river in Knoxville. Trouble is, any time developers see waterfront property, all they think of is high dollar residential.

Good call on staying out of Halls. They burned crosses out that way not too long ago. I suppose that it could have just been a couple of stupid, drunk Bubbas... but I kind of doubt it.

It's gotten somewhat better in the last ten years since people are moving there from outside but it still has that ignorant element, not to mention it's damn inconvenient.

Ok, maybe I'm way behind the times but when did West High School become one of the prime places to want to send your high school student to? Can someone give me a rough time frame on when this great transformation happened?

Maybe when it was completely renovated around 1989.

I went to Bearden Jr High and could have gone to Bearden High but chose West instead, started 10th grade there in the fall of 1979. I loved it so much, best decision I ever made. Back then it wasn't considered a good high school.

Yeah, and the years following that they started moving school lines further west (over to Morrell). In the 90s West really started becoming a good school.

It was coming up when I was at Bearden (early 90s). The redistricting is what really helped it improve

Looks like Toys"R"Us is going to be added to the list.
I can't remember the name but there was another toy store I would go to as a kid in Knoxville.

I seem to remember an old toy store on Kingston Pike back in the late 60s maybe early 70s. It was small but packed with really cool stuff. I got my little Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car there.

We had the World of Toys in Kingsport, my parents hated that place.

Growing up as a local in the late 70s in Gatlinburg was awesome! Local kids could pop into just about any restaurant or candy shop locally owned and they would feed us for free. Everyone took care of the kids. My last name wasn’t Ogle, Maples, Oakley and they still took care of me like I was one of their own.

Anybody remember Reed's Fine Foods in Sequoyah Hills? Not sure what if anything is there now. There was also an Esso gas station across the street, later became Exxon?

Did Shoney's on Walker Springs Road in West Knoxville close?

Yes, about a month ago. I believe that Western Avenue remains open as well as Broadway. Maybe Chapman Highway too, but I don't get out that way since the Disc Exchange closed. Walker Springs closed a month ago because they weren't able to renew the lease.

Speaking of Chapman Highway and closed businesses, I miss that military surplus store that was on the right in a Quonset hut. Forget what it was called.

If this were a perfect world, we'd find out that it was called "Military Surplus Store On the Right in a Quonset Hut".

Thanks,
Hard to believe a business that was in the same spot for such a long time couldn't renew their lease.
