Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

Looks like Twisters is going to expand into this spot. They are a small mom pop restaurant with a couple locations currently. One near East Town and one on Tazwell near the Union Co line. I've eaten there a few times and never had any complains.

Did Chandlers close down? Apparently they had a fire a couple of years ago and planned to reopen, but Google says permanently closed

I was on the Cumberland Avenue Strip recently, mid-March. It is frankly appalling what the City of Knoxville has done to it, with both the street redesign, and allowing those monster residential buildings to be built there. Those buildings are right up to the sidewalk. The curbing/lane guides/whatever you call those concrete things that are poured right in the street, just waiting for drivers to ram their wheels into them, and I did, are awful. Moreover, yet another big apartment building is being built across from the Mellow Mushroom.

I don't think they solved any of the problems that they set out to solve, but they sure have created a whole new set of problems, and have destroyed whatever character the Strip had. Nothing remains of the old Strip but the memories of you who were there in the 60's through 80's. I miss the funky, low-rise, low-brow, partying, fun Strip. I never want to drive through there again. It's awful.

Very disappointing to hear

The city served themselves. Took matching funds. Created housing initiatives. Tax the housing. Less policing of the problems created from young drinkers.

King Tut’s Grill is open,

Now it's not. Seham closed it at the end of last year.

I have a good friend who always loved to get Seham's big Greek salad with chicken, would split it with her daughter for two meals each. Huge!

Boy, that was a fun place when they were both there. Mo was quite an entertainer.

Well said, and true and well-known around here.

Additional bitching about the ruining of the Strip is quite welcome here.

I did a search of this thread, which is getting pretty big, and did not see a mention of the fact that The Holy Land's Denise Ajlourny passed away last September.

It won't be the same without her. Walter, her widower, is keeping things going, hopefully for quite a bit longer.

Nailed it. We had this great opportunity to craft a nice campus entertainment area and blew it. I was all for burying the power lines. Other than that, they really missed. And they don't even maintain the garden beds in the medians and along the sidewalks.

That is sad to hear, I will be going up there in June, but at least I do have the memories.....

I would bring back
The Sunday Brunch place that was on the top floor of the Hyatt.
Swensen’s Ice Cream
Bahou Container
Orange Bowl Pizza in West Town Mall
Absolutely,..... I second all of those, I was just thinking about Swensen's yesterday and wishing that I could get one of their big Sundaes that I used to get when I lived in Knoxville.

Well let's add Rankin Restaurant to this list of gone but not forgotten.
Many a great meal was consumed there.
I understand Twisters will be opening another location in Rankin soon.
