Good perspective on the loss

Such an important article. Of course we want to win them all - we're fans. That's what we do. But, realistically, that's not going to happen for the vast majority of teams. I'm excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds. We still have plenty of big opportunities in front of us, and I'm proud to support our team.

The personnel changes is a good point, but the “they need time to gel” argument is lame. We’ve had the same amount of time to gel as everyone else. This year was always expected to be a “rebuilding” year in the form of an 8-4/9-3 season but if they aren’t careful the REAL rebuilding year will be 2024 because our talented underclassmen aren’t getting much meaningful experience, particularly in the secondary.

Apparently I missed that Gibson got some run in the swamp. That’s good. Hopefully his PT will increase as the season progresses. Also want to see more from Matthews, Hobbs, Webb, Davis and the young OLs. They will all be critical to success in 2024. Also wouldn’t mind seeing Seldon in the slot.

I get what the writer is saying. However, it's still a fluff piece aimed at trying to calm down the torches and pitchforks crowd. Oh, and keep buying those tickets. I haven't written this team off, but they haven't played up to their potential in any game this season.

That's all true, but it's nothing that isn't true for any other team that was in contention for the playoffs last year or in the past. Great teams lose players and coaches and they reload for the next year. Fans have been fed this rebuilding year nonsense since Fulmer was here. Kinda hard to swallow when you watch Colorado. The fans aren't just concerned because of the Florida game. This offense has not looked exceptional in any game this year. For a coach that is an offensive guru, fielding a mediocre offense is concerning. That's not even talking about.the defense.

Weak minded BS and excuse making.

The article would make sense if Tennessee looked even somewhat prepared and were just outplayed by an average Florida getting up for a home game with some unfortunate breaks and calls.

It's one thing to try to execute a game plan and be beaten its another to be inept.

The whole effort was listless and pathetic, period.

What I saw was:
1) Lack of focus & pop warner mistakes by D1 players.
2) A mind boggling inability to cover easily identifiable routes in the first half, over and over and over
3) Rookie clock and read mistakes by Milton who has had, what 5-6 years of D1 coaching?
4) Inept clock management overall
5) Poor tackling
6) Inept 3rd down & long defense
7) CJH completely rattled during and after the game at his press conf.
8) DBs cant figure out they need to turn for the ball, who coaches that crap, my middle school players have better technique and discipline.
9) Shotgun on 4th and 1 or less, WTF? Joe is a big strong QB, put him under center, lord.
10) Receiver effort was poor

Good is the enemy of great.

Lowering standards results in a train wreck, just ask anyone in the military who preceded the current administration.

Realistic Tenn Fans with a knowledge of the game saw this as a rebuild year with success ceiling depending on 1) Milton's ability to execute at QB and 2) defensive improvement, especially secondary play.

The USCJr game will set the tone for the remainder of the season. If Rattler gets going in the passing game and Tenn O struggles like last 2 games it will get ugly, Beamer will roll up the points and the team will pack it in.

I agree with a lot of these points. Missing players, new coaches and a hostile environment are a bad match. What still bothers me is we are better than Florida but could not get it done for a myriad of reasons. Ultimately we have to clean up penalties and become a disciplined football team. Those ARE controllables and on the coaches.

The absence of cooper is a huge problem right now.

If they can find a way to win the next three games and be at 5-1 going to Bama, i’d pretty much forget the UF loss. I’m just skeptical they can pull that off.

That article scares me bc it looks like Golesh was the brains and heart behind our offense. It wasn’t just UF…Southern Illinois hung 49 on AP. UVA can’t win a game. This year looks much more likely to be 6-6 than 8-4. And that will kill any recruiting momentum.
It’s worth noting that Golesh likely cost his team a chance to win against Bama last weekend with his mismanagement. He’s not perfect either.

Good upbeat article, but the fact remains that the team was not prepared for the Swamp, or SC or Georgia last year. That is what is called a trend, and it so far has shown that Heupel cant win on the road. Yes, he beat LSU like a drum last season before the voodoo chickens woke up, but that seems to be more of the exception as opposed to the rule.

Missing Pili and Mays to call the line signals hurt a lot. Their experience cannot be replaced with a warm body. Pili may be gone for the season but lets hope Mays returns this week. This reason is just #11 to djews other 10 reasons. Lack of focus for a big game is inexcusable. Can't explain that one.

Somewhat agree... except that the loss at UF wasn't just as simple as "losses happen". The better team did not win. That's been true many times over the last 30 years or so and was again Saturday. That is true even with the missing players.

UT did not play well. There were a bunch of critical pre snap penalties. The bad live ball calls went uniformly against UT and had an impact on the game.

I respect Heupel... but believe that Milton's decision making hurt at times. On one of his shots to the corner of the end zone on 3rd down he threw into good coverage. On the replay you can clearly see a dig route wide open for a first down in the middle of the field.

There are plenty piling on Milton... and the more I think about it the less I think he was the critical problem. If I had to boil it down to one thing it would be the defensive game plan entering the game and the failure to adjust until half time. There was no reason to go "bend, don't break" vs this Gator O. None. They did it right in the 2nd half by pressing their receivers then bringing the heat against the QB and run game.

Losses happen but not without reasons. This shouldn't have been a loss. There is blame to go around from Banks to Milton to Spraggins to everyone else. It doesn't end all hope for the season but the Vols have to get a lot better and that right quick.

No doubt about it. Nothing kills an offense like Defensive Tackles getting upfield. Pockets get crushed, RBs have to dance and nothing works consistently. I don't want to call out players, but it looked like the situation was just too big for a couple of guys we had out there.

No coach is perfect. What is wanted though is a coach who gets his teams to exceed expectations. Golesh clearly did this week while Heupel did not. Not advocating replacing Heupel at all of course. He is doing a fantastic job overall. But the last two weeks have not been the best. I don’t think that continues to happen though

I’m sorry but that’s BS. This isn’t a good Florida team in fact that’s probably the worst Florida team you’re going to see in the swamp for several years.

I’m not sure what the issue is exactly but the Oline must be shored up. The Milton experiment needs to go ahead and come to a conclusion. I’m not even saying most of the issue was him but the skill players on this team do not believe in him. It would be better at this point to lean on the running game and bring Nico along if Milton doesn’t look better vs UTSA and I mean a lot better. I’m not sure about the new OC either but I would like a chance to see him work with a better qb than milton.

This I absolutely do know. Every single fan of this team is ready to tear their hair out if they see Hadden trot back out on the field. Defense is absolute trash in the secondary; they can’t cover in zone or man, they can’t tackle either reliably.
