Good Season Ladies

This team overachieved considering our injury woes. Thank you to the
Lady Vol seniors. Cierra Burdick, Ariel Massengale, and Isabelle Harrison.
Warlick on seniors, They are just outstanding young women. They do a lot in the community and just the type of kids we want at Tennessee.
Ariel Massengale: "Cierra, Izzy, and I wanted to take our team back to the Final Four
and wanted to end the drought. It hurts."

I wish they could all have been on the court with a healthy Russell, Jones, and Tucker. I appreciate their effort as the injuries piled up. 30 wins with the injuries we had is a great season.

damn it volfan

don't forget Izzy :)

it has been a very good year

You can put 5 high school All America's on the floor--but if they wilt under pressure you obviously are not going to win big games. We wilt under pressure. That's what we did tonight--just as we did a couple of years ago against Louisville. We used to intimidate other teams; now, we get intimidated--barely hang on against Pitt, fall behind by 17 to zaga. Heck, we have more talent than Maryland, much less pitt or zaga. Sad to see.

More talent than Maryland? Put down the pipe.

Maryland's trio of guards are better than Tennessee's. Burdick is better than Howard, Jones better than Graves.

Maryland was the better team on paper and on the court.

Our guards matched up pretty well. In stretches, Massengale looked great. Her end to end lay-up off a rebound was a thing of beauty.

But match-ups are generally more important than abstract assessments of talent and Maryland's size advantage in the post became an insurmountable barrier. The Lvs had to collapse to defend the post which left perimeter shots open. Once Maryland starting hitting those, the game turned. On the offensive end, the LVs could get very little in terms of paint points and were forced into a perimeter game. And since Maryland did not have to double any of our interior players, the Lvs found very little spacing.

I do agree with the announcer who thought the Lvs should have had Graves facing up and driving more the basket. The straight up post game was not working and they had some success with Graves driving. (Though Burdick and Carter were stuffed on multiple occasions so that strategy may not have made much difference).

Imagine this team with Izzy, Jasmine Jones and a healthy Mercedes. I think the odds are that the LVs run Maryland out of the gym.

You CANNOT compare Jones and Graves. Jones is a Center and Bash is a forward. Of course Jones would look better going up against freaking Graves when you have a forward trying to guard a big center.

Don't care enough to know.

You have certainly proved that. Now read this next part very slowly. Better yet, have your Mommy read it to you - if you don't know enough to know who might be a better coach than Holly, then that means you cannot know if she is or isn't a good coach.

we have more talent than Maryland...

Boy you sure see things differently than I do (scratching my head). Our tallest player on the court was 3 inches shorter than two of their players. You don't think being taller is a talent? Their guards are all better ball handlers and better shooters than UT's guards, (although not better defensively).

Frankly, I'm surprised the LV's only lost by 10. It was all they could do to cover Jones and Howard (although she didn't play much) under the basket and simultaneously keep the Maryland shooters at bay. I'm amazed at how well they did.

But remember that's all Holly's fault. She had on the wrong shirt and her eyes were darting from side to side and her hands were on her hips. If she hadn't of done any of that the LV's would have been taller than Maryland.

OH Crap! It was the hands on her hips that did us in!!!! Curses, if we could only find a coach held her/his hands on her head.

+1... I saw good ball movement and defense for the first 30 minutes of the game.... but we were having to work too hard on defense down low, and the MD girl his 3 three's in a row, and then a lucky two off the glass-- ballgame. Couldn't ask for a better effort, proud of the LV's! This team needed a pure shooter, like a Zolman, and better luck on the injury front.

Player assessments matter. Tennessee's guards don't match up well with MD's at all. Two of the MD guards were big, all three of them could shoot, all three of them could attack the glass and beat their defender off the dribble. Ariel was game and she kept Tennessee in it with some timely buckets, but Reynolds/Carter were of no help. Watching the game, you knew it was just a matter of time before the MD trio would figure out how to work around the defense and put some points on the board; the same was not true for Tennessee.

That combined with MDs interior size on offense, their ability to protect the paint, and Tennessee's two legitimate post players on the bench in street clothes made for an uphill battle.

Tell that to Nina Davis. ijs

Davis has a few advantages over Burdick/Graves: she is 5'11 but has a longer wingspan, she can jump out of the gym, and she has a legitimate post with size next to her to do the dirty work.

Tennessee's frontline was getting murdered by Maryland. They may not be fast, but they were able to get just in the right spot to prevent any easy layups.

Burdick, to my surprise, was probably the most consistent player from start to finish, even with her 4 game bobble to begin the year.

Ariel and izzy were both solid for the team. Bashaara had her ups and downs, but overall was good.

Freshmen...didn't live up to their expectations.

Draya/Jordan...were not the caliber one would expect for a team with FF aspirations.

Nia...invisible by the time the Chattanooga game rolled around and hasn't been seen since.

Kortney who?

Good job by those girls. Hate they lost, but still proud they made it as far as they did.
