Good story on roster challenges for this yr & next

Also this is a bad excuse Colorado basically flipped an entire roster in one season in the transfer portal
And how'd that work out for them?

The portal isn't like stopping by Wal-mart for what you need. There are benefits to shopping there, but there are also costs. Lack of team cohesion, development, discipline, knowledge of your system and playbook ... the list of downsides is almost as long as getting a freshman out of high school.

For positions of great need, the portal is better than nothing. But it's no panacea, no cure to all ills. Use with caution.

Go Vols!

The same was said about Dooley's, Butch's, and Pruitt's tenures at Tennessee, and they didn't have access to a nearly unrestricted transfer portal.

There's no reason for UT to be as devoid of quality depth as we seem to be, in comparison to teams like Florida and Missouri this year, and going forward.
Yep...Best hit the portal hard to fill some gaps. The portal changes the game that former coaches didn't have.

It is nice to see that CJH and staff have had success while operating under these circumstances. It is actually pretty fantastic what has been accomplished. The greatest thing is that we are moving out of this terrible spot for the roster. Knowing things can only look up in very encouraging.
And into what? Look to have some good guys on paper, but will be a while before we can say we are in a better place than we were before.

This is true but my expectations would have been more realistic if Tennessee PR machine hadn’t over hyped Joe Milton all offseason.
I think UT needs to look at their hiring process for coaches. No way should you terminate a coach and not have a plan in place to get a new coach hired ASAP. We essentially lost the entire class the year CJH was hired due to him being hired so late in the game.

I agree. Our coaching hiring process has been atrocious.

That said, I think the firing of Pruitt was complicated by the fact they essentially fired the AD as well and wanted the new AD to hire their own coach. Given the timing and the cloud looming over the program, I believe that had a lot to do with White just essentially bringing Josh over with him. Known commodity when the “house is on fire”….

But Hooker was a Pruitt recruit who would have never seen the field at UT if Milton hadn't been injured in 2021.
Speculation. Unless you have analyzed CJH's historical QB management or have inside info, there's simply no way to know definitively.

Heup is facing the biggest rebuilding challenge at UT in my memory. And my memory goes back to when Doug Dickey took over. He's doing a pretty darn good job IMO.
Yes, I think he's doing a good job, and I really don't know who would be doing a better job than him. Also, program building is not linear...it never has been...but it's tougher today. Majors wouldn't have lasted in today's world. Case in point...JH first three years at UT = 0.676 win %. Johnny career win % @ UT = 0.645%.

Here's the thing...I think... UT is a brand that if JH can connect a few more good seasons together, then we'll start to see us get into the upper tier realm more consistently. It's just so hard to get there now w/ the current and future SEC landscape. There's also the possibility that success looks different in the future w/ OK/TX joining, and the gauntlet everyone's going to have to go thru.

At least they're getting to the point where they don't have to just take bodies to fill spots. The portal can be hit or miss. Building from the highschool ranks is where UGA and Bubba are. If you expect to compete with them more than every so often then you'll have to do the same.

Some do not like excuses - I don't either .... BUT these are the facts and reality of where we are at. If anything, the 10-2 record was pre-mature - very much welcomed though. I think we won on pure emotion that led to confidence once the wins started. I think 2022 is a sign of things to come but we need to be patient.

If we lose patience and start the cycle again, it is just going to take longer to get back to where we want to be and honestly, at some point we will be so far removed we'll become just like those teams we think we should beat easily year after year.

I've been saying this all year. Last year was a combination of a lot of things going right and little going wrong. Having the deadliest combo in football definitely masked a lot of glaring weaknesses. If we can hang in, stay supportive of the team and staff, and let one more class come in, we will start seeing a big change in the program. This was a scholarship restricted rebuild that has been to the Orange bowl already and a bowl in the other two. That is huge.

And I do find it crazy that folks think the transfer portal is a cure. It is helpful if you need those one or two players, but not to fill an entire team. Perfect example is Colorado. I know the media and folks were pushing that as the way to do it, but Colorado sank quickly when they started playing good teams.

Very simple rule to have lasting success - build the core through recruiting and fill holes and depth with the portal.

Depending on the portal as a way of building a core is a recipe for mediocrity at best, disaster at worst. If Kiffin continues his dependency on the portal, it will catch up with him quickly.

That isn't an excuse, it's reality. Big difference.

I never once heard him moaning about this or making any excuses, really, after any loss. But the whole idea of expecting the program to be at elite level 2-3 years into a total rebuild off sanctions and mass transfers is beyond ridiculous, especially given that the program hasn't been elite in 20 years.

And proceeded to go 4-8 getting blown out way worse than anyone did us by the better and even middling teams they played in a very weak conference....

You just threw a pick6 bud. Scored a TD for the OTHER team...the majority of VOL fans that understand football and are thankful we have CJH.

"There’s an entire recruiting class that basically is gone from our roster, and really a majority of the one before that. And so we're old, and we're really young, and there's [a gap].

I support CJH 100% but I don't want to hear excuses.
If I take facts as excuses, are they still excuses. I guess if you want facts to be excuses then you can run with that narrative. It's OK everyone has an opinion, or he could say I'm not going to get into the roster depth or lack thereof. At the chance of making our fans mad.

They’re going to win 4 games. Sure there’s a lot of guys in the portal who can take your team talent from 1 win to 4.

But from 8 wins to 10 or 11? There’s not many of those and you’re competing with the entire field for those guys.
Yep, and they got a lot of players that are sitting now because of team rules and academic trouble. 2 of them sitting played at Tennessee last year and were starters for Colorado until breaking team rules. CULTURE MEANS A LOT.

En route to a 4-win season.

You beat me to it haha. Nice.

I wish all the Negas would just go spend some time in the RF and check out the kids we landed for 23, the amazing class we have so far for 2024 (75% of them are bluechip 4* and 5*) which is almost complete now, and the list of kids we already have here visiting for 25...the future on the Hill hasnt been this bright since peak Fulmer in maybe 2000? 2001? This 24 class in particular is nasty. Will be a difference maker. GO VOLS
