Just because it is unrealistic does not mean that I cannot continue to voice my opinions and desires.

Congress will continue to buy votes by passing the tax burden to the uber-wealthy, until the ultra wealthy finally decide to depart en masse, causing the entire system to crumble from a lack of funding. This will probably take another hundred years or so to happen, but there is no evidence to say that is not where we are headed.

I'm all for the consumption tax system. Then the haves would still be paying a tremendous share of taxes, but we might actually encourage savings. Nobody would have a free ride and those living off of no longer taxed wealth would still have tax bills to pay. Loopholes die. Altogeher works. Doesn't at all satisfy the politicians who instituted the disaster that we live with today.

Oh no! The rich would still be paying the heaviest burden even under that type of tax! Egad!

This is our second agreement today...terrifying.
you have a few lucid moments and something rational actually comes from your keyboard. then we'll agree. all of the other times, I'm the only rational one in the debate.:)

I actually used an emoticon. I think it's my second.

Well let's see if they want to live they are forced to pay some sort of tax. Not unless they have the means to supply utilities, food, fuel, etc. on their own. Commune?

I know a select handful of people with the means to supply their own food, water, utilities, etc. without any reliance on anyone else. Therefore, it is entirely possible for people to be 'self-reliant' and therefore avoid a consumption tax. Unfortunately, it is much harder to avoid property taxes and estate taxes.

A select handful? Compared to 300 million? Congrats to that handful but those corporate types living in Central Park West don't have the means to grow corn and milk cows in the park.

...and that is the culmination of a set of personal choices made.

And it is possible for people to be self-reliant. Are you advocating our nation revert to an agrarian commune in order to completely avoid paying any taxes?

Not at all. I have no problem paying taxes. I have a problem when people are shelling out over a third of their hard earned income to the government. I have absolutely no problem paying the government 5-15% of my income in return for providing me with opportunity and protecting my liberties. Some are probably comfortable with a larger percentage, some are uncomfortable at the percentage I named. They should have that choice though.

Neither. If the rich choose to be rich, they pay more taxes no matter what the system is. They have no 'choice' in the matter. No matter what the system is, they will pay a higher precentage. If they are rich, they live a higher lifestyle. They will be forced to pay higher taxes. You're a little closer to some utopia thinking there is a way for the rich to not HAVE to pay the greater burden of taxes.
