Good win over Vandy. The one negative…

Shots from JJJ & KC appeared to be alittle flat. That was why some rattled out. Probably a sign of mental fatigue.

This team probably got home 2-3am Thursday morning. That can have an affect on your energy & focus, even if you are 18- 22 yrs old

So 33% which equals 50% fg.

Yes, but vs Florida he was 1-5 from 3. So still not 6 good games in a row from the floor no matter how many ways you try to split the hair.
The whole point of my first post was that he does things well enough on nights where he's not shooting well to still be a valuable player. But he is what he is, usually good (50+ from the floor 8 games) or bad (20 percent or lower 8 games) shooting the ball.

So him going 2-14 is only surprising in that he normally reigns in his shot attempts when it's not falling. Last night with Vescovi and Chandler being off he likely felt like he had to keep shooting.

I was waiting to post this under BTO’s report (which I always look forward to and, if he posts one, mods please feel free to move this to a reply in that thread).

Vanderbilt is a much improved team, gave Kentucky all it wanted in Rupp, then beat LSU and Missouri at home. They’re also the only team to win at Bud Walton this year, amazingly. They were coming in playing very well. So beating Vandy is no small task. Further, as a Nashvillian, beating them 10 straight is personally gratifying to me. Hope it goes to 30 straight. So I’m coming away from this game with a generally positive feeling.

I don’t really take much from KC’s bad game. He just never got in rhythm with the foul trouble (until the end) and he’ll bounce back. He was big when it was time to win the game. I don’t worry too much about losing the big lead and Vandy making it close. Like I said, they’ve become a good team and they always give Tennessee trouble. They weren’t going to go away without a fight.

But JJJ’s bad performance bothers me. I was really hoping “good JJJ” was what we would see going forward. I’d hoped he had turned the corner. Last night’s performance indicates that he hasn’t. He was 2-14, 1-7 from 3, and missed a ton of shots he’s been hitting. It’s no coincidence that his off night coincided with some regression from UT’s offense. He’s a guy who has the size and athleticism, when he’s on, to go get a bucket and break scoring droughts. But he looked like the JJJ from before the Texas game.

I really hope that was an aberration and good JJJ shows up the rest of the season.

Mickael Jordan had off nights, so did Grant and Admiral, Good Grief

With ON out for the year the Vols need all they can get from JJJ and take what they can get from the Frosh coming off the bench. Last night was weird in that I thought after the 1st half double digit lead that UT would continue to build the lead in the 2nd half. Then early on Vandy started hitting 3 balls and got back in the game. Pleased that the Vols had enough in the tank to pull out the W. Now hope we play our very best against KY.

To me, I think JJJ just needs to be consistently decent. Not amazing just average

With Nkamhoua out, we definitely need him to take less 3s and penetrate a bit more but when he is open he has to knock down some open ones.

He is a great defender no question about that.

Chandler and Vescovi couldn’t risk picking up their 3rd fouls playing tight defense on Vanderbilt’s 3-point shooters. So Bailey and Powell had to sub in for defense and to hopefully burn minutes without sacrificing the lead. The NCAA needs to give players a 6th foul and/or get the part time refs better training and full time positions.

The difference I see that gives me hope even thru the poor shooting night is that he remains confident, is not exclusively jacking up threes, is actually finishing contested shots around the rim (which he has historically struggled with) and is looking forward to shooting FT and shooting with confidence. Those things are all key when your shot isn't falling. As long as he'll keep doing those I won't get too nervous about a 2-14 night.

What's up with KC's foul shots? It looks like he's really nonchalant and casually throws it up.

He is taking 3 dribbles now. I think that he was maybe taking 2 at the start of the season. Mental block. He’s much better than 65% and making them at the end of close games is something that should improve drastically with more reps.

You notice JJJ's shot being flat on the rewatch? It was

Flat on the mid-range. Not flat on 3's and FT's. He had a couple of 3's that were pretty off (especially the airball) but there were about 3 that were dead on and easily could have gone in but caught just enough rim to roll out.

I think this may be a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to what has been the exception and not the rule, recently.

I love that stayed engaged, defensively, and that he also didn't wilt when his shot wasn't falling. He stayed aggressive and wasn't afraid to take the next open look, which to me says that he still has faith in himself, which hasn't always been the case on that end of the floor.
