But he's uncensored and hardcore. He must be spilling the truth when he's shooting from the hip that hard.

I have a feeling this as well as much he has to say comes from regions of the body other than the hip.

The facts are this.
1. The NFL sent out a memo to all teams because a complaint had been filed against the Patriots for doing exactly what they were caught doing.
2. The Pats continued to do so AFTER they and the rest of the NFL were reminded with the memo (as if they didn’t know the rules) that it is in fact against the rules to tape the opposition sidelines during a game.
3. Bill B denied doing EXACTLY what they were busted doing.

The penalty did not fit the crime in this case. The owners and coaches are held to a much lower degree than players. Bill B should have been suspended and the complete draft taken. $500,000 is nothing if it helps you win a Super bowl. The risk is worth it if you can get away with it. The penalty should be far worse than the reward.

I refer back to a Criminology theory. For every time someone actually serves time for a crime committed, there are 10 others offenses that he does not serve time for. There is no way on this earth that Belicheck did this one time... the Jets was the only time they had enough proof to punish him for. Anyone who does this is, and forever will be, cheating. It's no better/worse than using steroids IMO.

Goodell is covering this mess up because this is not just about the Patriots. It's about the face of the NFL... the Patriots are the biggest Dynasty since the Cowboys of the early 90's. If the NFL had to punish them for doing this multiple times, could you imagine the repercussions?

Just go ahead and suspend him for 1 season and move on. Taking draft picks hurts the fans more than the coach and 500K is prolly like $500 to him...

Taking away a first-round draft choice is actually a pretty big punishment, IMO. With that pick, a team that drafts well (like the Patriots) can reasonably expect to get an 7-8 year starter. So for the next eight years or so, that's a hole in the Patriots lineup that will have to be filled somehow. A good starter who probably would have spent the best part of his career with the Patriots is just gone now. I agree that the Patriots got off pretty light, considering how blatantly they appear to have disregarded the commissioner's memo, but taking a good player's whole career away from them isn't exactly insignificant.

One problem is that the Patriots have been so damn successful (because of cheating maybe?) that they are able to sign some pretty good free agents for a salary smaller than another team would be required to pony up. Thus, the filling of that spot is not quite as difficult for them as would be for some other teams.

Didn't say that. Just saying that $500k is 10% of what he gets from the Pats in a year.

I hear ya.

I've heard pundits on TV try to rationalize it by saying that's a big deal to Bellicheck when they know more than anyone the team is owned by a billionaire.

It's all good, baby.

IMO, taking their first round draft pick was nothing to them. They had 2 and the Pats are so loaded, it really has no immediate impact. Hell, they even traded down with the first round pick they had. They got a mild slap on the wrist because of the SB's they have won over the last few years and they have been portrayed as America's darlings. Bellicheat cheated and knew he was cheating all along. Now that Walsh brought that out, suspend him. Any other form of punishment is laughable.

They're loaded right now, but they are also old at quite a few positions. They've got Jerod Mayo coming in now to provide some much-needed young blood on that defense for the next several years; imagine how much more Belichick would like to have two of him?

That team is going to need to be overhauled fairly significantly in the next few years, especially on defense. The fastest, cheapest, and most certain way of doing that is first round draft picks. Taking an entire young first-rounder's career away from them during that process is not exactly a "mild slap on the wrist."

Agreed that Belichick should have been personally punished more, though. He should have been suspended for a couple of games.
