The mid-term election was overwhelmingly positive for the GOP. I'm curious how things have fared in these states. I understand there are restraints put on them by the federal government ie drilling. But if states are the petri-dish for government, I would hope that things have improved in ones that are controlled by the GOP.

I can speak for Ohio - a state that elected a Republican governor and has a GOP majority in the house and senate. To my knowledge spending hasn't decreased significantly, and I know that taxes haven't decreased hardly at all. What gives?

Anyone else have more feedback from other states that are controlled by the GOP? Or does this not matter at all, and is the Federal government responsible for everything?

Wisconsin's deficit has reduced dramatically since the Republicans took over. Walker's reforms have, obviously, been quite popular.

I also think it's interesting that states with complete GOP control such as Maine, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are pretty much a Blue state when it comes to the Presidential election.

•9 of the 10 states with the lowest current unemployment rates are under Republican control, including six under complete Republican control, one of which is North Dakota with the lowest rate of 3%
•5 of the 10 states with highest current unemployment rates are under Democratic control, and the four worst are all under Democratic control, one of which is Nevada with the highest rate of 12%
•8 of the 10 states with the greatest improvement from 2009 to 2012 are under Republican control (and 7 of those are under complete Republican control)
•7 of the 10 states with the worst performance from 2009 to 2012 are under Democratic control
•10 of 17 states with current unemployment rates greater than the national average are under Democratic control
•The state with the greatest improvement from 2009 to 2012 (36%) is Michigan, under Republican control
•The two states with the worst performances from 2009 to 2012, Louisiana and Idaho (the rates actually went up,) are under Republican control, but their current rates are still less than the national rate of 8.2%
•States under Democratic control saw an average decrease of 7.7% in the rate of unemployment
•States under Republican control saw an average decrease of 15.3% in the rate of unemployment, virtually double the improvement of states under Democratic

Unemployment Drops Twice as Fast in States Under GOP Control | RedState

Voters in 17 states elected new Republican governors in November 2010. This new breed of fiscally-conservative, tea party-supported Republican governors took office in January 2011. Here is how those states have fared since then, in terms of their unemployment rates:

Kansas - 6.9% to 6.1% = a decline of 0.8%

Maine - 8.0% to 7.4% = a decline of 0.6%

Michigan - 10.9% to 8.5% = a decline of 2.4%

New Mexico - 7.7% to 6.7% = a decline of 1.0%

Oklahoma - 6.2% to 4.8% = a decline of 1.4%

Pennsylvania - 8.0% to 7.4% = a decline of 0.6%

Tennessee - 9.5% to 7.9% = a decline of 1.6%

Wisconsin - 7.7% to 6.8% = a decline of 0.9%

Wyoming - 6.3% to 5.2% = a decline of 1.1%

Alabama - 9.3% to 7.4% = a decline of 1.9%

Georgia - 10.1% to 8.9% = a decline of 1.2%

South Carolina - 10.6% to 9.1% = a decline of 1.5%

South Dakota - 5.0% to 4.3% = a decline of 0.7%

Florida - 10.9% to 8.6% = a decline of 2.3%

Nevada - 13.8% to 11.6% = a decline of 2.2%

Iowa - 6.1% to 5.1% = a decline of 1.0%

Ohio - 9.0% to 7.3% = a decline of 1.7%

Every single one of these 17 states has seen its unemployment rate decline since January 2011.

Maine was generally a Republican stronghold until Clinton, but they tend to go centrist, see: Collins and Snowe.

Take the source with a grain of salt, but it does appear - according to their own chart - that GOP-controlled states, on average, saw a larger average decline in unemployment than Dem-controlled states.

Now let's look at the eight states that elected new Democratic governors in 2010. Just like their Republican counterparts, these new Democratic governors took office in January 2011. Here's how those states have fared since then, in terms of unemployment:

Colorado - 8.8% to 8.1% = a decline of 0.7%

New York - 8.2% to 8.6% = an increase of 0.4%

Oregon - 9.9% to 8.4% = a decline of 1.5%

California - 12.1% to 10.8% = a decline of 1.3%

Connecticut - 9.3% to 7.8% = a decline of 1.5%

Hawaii - 6.7% to 6.3% = a decline of 0.4%

Minnesota - 6.8% to 5.6% = a decline of 1.2%

Vermont - 6.0% to 4.6% = a decline of 1.4%

The average drop in the unemployment rate in these states was 0.95%, approximately the same as the drop seen nationally

Good post...

This show unemployment is dropping in all 25 states that elected Governors in 2010.

Is unemployment dropping in the other 25 states also?

All but one state saw unemployment drop (NY), but GOP states dropped at a higher rate than Dem ones

Tennessee has a decline of 1.6% in UE since Haslam took office.

The GOP also has control of the TN House and Senate.

Do the other states with 1.5% declines or greater have the GOP in total control of their state government ?

CNBC just named Texas the #1 state in the country to do business

News Headlines

State that improved the most

News Headlines

By one measure or another, North Dakota, Wyoming and Idaho can claim the honor of most improved in 2012

News Headlines

If there is a top state for business in our annual study, there must be a bottom state. For 2012, that dubious distinction goes to Rhode Island — for the second year in a row.

Here are states with a decrease of 1.5 or more that have a majority of Dem control:
Connecticut

Gotta think that the recovery in nevada is due in large part to the fact that they were hit so hard in 08/09

It surprises me that KY is on this list.
I have never checked but they are pretty much solid GOP in national elections. I would not have thought the Dems would be in control of the state government.

Spending is pretty much flat in Pa, but some programs took big hits, i.e. social services and education. Taxes are staying the same at state level but went up locally, 11% for city and 17% for school tax (it maymdrop under 10% as the budget did pass with some more school funds than predicted). Any, it is a wash as far as that goes. Also, not many are hiring, except seasonal and temps. UE is down because people have quit looking and have run out of weeks.

Texas requires a 750 ONE TIME fee to do business in their state.

PA requires 250 annual fee plus they require me to carry a 50,000 dollar bond and pay to have my business named in a newspaper. The total cost is roughly 3,000 per year to just operate there.

Compare 35,000 over a 10 year period to 750 dollars and you quickly see why certain states have more businesses.

If you were only doing business in one state and had a 10 year loan to get it off the ground which of these two states would you start scratch in?

Temp services do most of the hiring in my area. IMO, the temp services are hurting the working class.
