meanwhile 2 months into it and the head Dem has yet to make a dent in the crisis. Yep, this is definitely important stuff

Dumb statement but I'm not entirely unsympathetic to his point of how the Feds forced this on private company.

Is he wrong?

"I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong is subject to some sort of political pressure that is — again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown," Barton said. "So I apologize."

If they don't get it capped. Another 5 billion, say every 30 days will be in order.

The amount may be correct but what is the authority under which putting this into an escrow account is ordered? Does the POTUS automatically have this power?

Listen, I want BP to pay for everything but it's odd that we can dispense with law and authority to extract money from BP but have to enforce life jacket rules for oil sucking barges.

putting it in an escrow makes it 0% more likely anything will get paid. it was purely a political move.

"to be administered by the government"

my understanding was the gov't had no control over the fund,.

The guy was clearly trying to liken it to the bailouts and stimulus funds. In that regard, epic fail.

Haven't looked, but I'd wager this guy was three days before hand *****ing up a storm that Obama hadn't done anything. So of course when he does, its a shakedown?

What a tool.

Glad to see the GOP leadership came in and stomped him back into his corner.

If you don't think that was all ironed out and agreed to before Obama's speech the night before the meeting, you need help.

Think about it: Obama points to it as proof he is acting to help people and BP gets to give the impression they are committed to doing the right thing. Everybody wins. I guarantee this was worked out well in advance of the speech and the meeting.

he's absolutely truthful and you know it lawgaytor. 'the muslim' did do a shakedown and threatened them with his thug Holder. it's no different than the mafia.

You lose credibility when you insist on referring to Obama as "the muslim."

he's more of a muslim than a christian or American for that matter, and that is the truth. However, facts are facts. this guy did shakedown BP or the AG was going after them hard.

How do you think it was worked out? Before or after the speech is irrelevant. The question is how voluntary the action was.

If it weren't an Obama trend (see previous actions without prior authority) I be less concerned about it.

on the scale of things to get outraged about this is a 2 or 3. the gm screwjob to the bondholders was a 10+ in my book.

why protect the bondholders when there's a proletariat out there that needs to be protected from the ravages of the capitalist leviathan?

agree. I'm only bringing it up as context for the OP. He does have a point but his delivery was badly bungled.

Longer term, we see a president that has no qualms about messing with private industry regardless of authority so long as it suits his agenda.

And people referred to W. as "King George" Obama has yielded none of the exec power George grabbed and doubled down on it.

I didn't say I thought the escrow fund was a good idea or a bad one. I'm just saying politically it makes a lot of sense for both Obama and BP.

You are just beyond help at this point.

I wouldn't fall out of my chair if it was BPs idea in the first place.

who do think is getting screwed by this? the bp stockholders. when bp goes bankrupt, who's going to take it over. 'THE MUSLIM'S' government, they'll get BP and the stockholders will be screwed again. i would say this will be close to a 10+ too. a shakedown and a take over, gotta the thug left.
