Kinda torn on reading this. Why make more dumbazz legislation? If the people want to peaceably assemble then the government can F off and leave them alone. As far as congregating on government property hell they paid for it!

And if it turns violent or into a riot aren’t there already laws against that? 🤷‍♂️

Exactly. I'm not so sure I would be fist bumping and high fiving just yet.

That was federal land, this is about state land like not letting homeless tent cities pop up on the lawns outside courthouses etc. I was in Oregon a few years ago and this was prevalent. Nothing we want in Tennessee.
So does this new law cover something that wasn’t covered before or just amplify the offense based on circumstances? That screams of more hate crime BS legislation if that’s the case.

The government needs to leave people alone who are peacefully protesting and I’ll shout out to protect the left’s right to do so also even though I don’t agree with their politics. That’s Democracy.

But was there really a gap in the law related to persistent presence up to effective inhabitation on government land?

Ask a lawyer. I didn't write the law.
This is from the article which has me concerned. I’m just going by it I didn’t read the bill.

“Most notably, the new law now states that those who illegally camp on state property would now face a Class E felony, punishable by up to six years in prison, rather than a misdemeanor. Felony convictions in Tennessee result in the revocation of an individual’s right to vote”

If that quote is correct then this sounds bad.

If the people are peacefully demonstrating leave them alone. If they get violent throw their ass in jail. If it’s closing time and they won’t leave get a damn fire hose or water cannon and clear them out but be sure to smile and invite them back the following morning at opening time! 🤷‍♂️

I haven’t read the law but reading the article I’m thinking “what does this really solve that wasn’t covered before?” 🤷‍♂️
It’s supposed to solve the problem of Bill Lee’s cowardice being screened by some “tough guy” legislation. Bill Lee had his chance to show what he was made of and was found lacking.

This law changed the penalties from being misdemeanors to felonies and require mandatory sentences. It also requires these losers to pay for crap they destroy. If you don't like it vote democrat.
So if they weren’t responsible for public property damage before then I’m in favor of that. But amplification of penalty just because it’s state land sounds like BS. If it’s a crime, it’s a crime.

Oh stop it. I’m GOP leaning but I can look at bad legislation if I see it and call it bad legislation regardless of who wrote it. If the property damage wasn’t covered before then fine they should have to pay. The rest sounds like hate crime amplification BS.

The way I read it is it just changes the penalties from being a misdemeanor to a felony for rioting and destruction of property and imposes a mandatory 45 day jail sentence instead of walking free like our fellow liberal states do. I'm glad it was passed, I'm sick of these punks tearing down our cities. If you have a problem with it, too bad.

Oh FFS. I posted a link to the actual bill. There’s a lot in it that’s easy to support. I just think the amplification for state property is silly. Again if it’s a crime it’s a crime regardless of whose property it is and restitution is in order. I like a lot of the stuff in the bill though. 🤷‍♂️

So could state property be a statue? I think that is what state property is aimed at.

I don’t know if that is what the bill is targeting or not. But if the bill holds people accountable and forces restitution for damage to public property, including statues, then that’s fine with me.

The damages might be as simple as a power washing. But that comes with a price tag so make them pay it. Better?

We're good.
