Governor & TN State Legislators

I'm an old fart and a 40 yr season ticket holder. As far back as I can remember the athletic dept has stood on its own financially, with the exception of funding of the scholarships. However, when the athletic department was profitable, they would donate millions to the academic side, as funding toward the scholarships. Forgetting about contracts hanging over the athletic department, Covid has obviously been a big hit on the department, but on academics as well. There is no way state legislators are going to do anything for an athletic department before the financial issues on the academic side are resolved.

Not UT related, but you are likely to see many small private colleges go under, or dramatically cut their athletic departments. Athletic wise, these small private schools don't have TV contracts, with gate receipts and donations as the primary sources of cash. Finances were tight before, but Covid may be the last straw.

I think athletic scholarships are funded by the AD. In reality football, mens basketball and to some degree womens basketball pays all the bills for the AD and band.

The state should install a toll on I-75 south so all the Ohioans driving into Tennessee must pay $20 to enter the state. The proceeds go to the athletic department. It will be the largest transfer of wealth this country has ever seen.

Novel! The savings in towing and Highway Patrol work at "Malfunction Junction" alone would probably pay for, say, COACH BUYOUTS?

Tennessee is a public school. It's employees are state employees. When can the state government get involved with matters at UT?

All we hear about is money, money, money problems blah blah.

I don't believe UT has money issues. But, let's say they do. Why doesn't the state get involved and make a massive investment in UT football? Why aren't more funds made available?

If UT football is rocking and rolling it's a major economic boost to our state and local communities. People spending tons of money to see good football will provide returns many times over.

The State of Tennessee does not need to get involved in college athletics, a completely stupid idea. The present Governor Bill Lee, is an Auburn graduate. In a recent basketball tournament in Nashville, he invited the whole Auburn team to his house and totally ignored the "the University of Tennessee".

I seriously doubt the Governor and State Legislature have the Tennessee Athletic Department's budget shortfall high on list of priorities.......

There are tons of other things going on in the state Covid related that could use 40-50 million dollars that actually matter than UT Athletics.

Hey!! Don't blame every thing on the dam- virus!! The State of Tennessee has many other things to worry over that "out shine" UT sports. Roads, bridges, the condition of state parks, the state owned buildings, etc., just to name a few. As to UT football, good management from the top to the bottom with a firm plan to get toward the top of the sport is what is needed. However this management seems to elude UT.

The state has people involved at UT. Who do you think the school president works for? He answers to the state board of trustees. It’s not the states job to bail out UT for poor decision making on coaches. If that was the case every state college and university would have their hand out and expecting bailouts. UT has to operate on the money generated through UT both public and private donations. UT revenues are down and so are the states revenues due to the virus.

So, genius, what is your solution, what HC is available is a 100% bonafide hire to guarantee UT National Championships for the next millennia?

It is absolutely amazing to me that some people think the University of Tennessee only exists for football.

Wait, you mean it doesn't?

To be fair, look at how much stronger of a student the University of Alabama is getting since they hired Nick Saban.....

Be that as it may, I would hate to think a student that is smart enough to get accepted at the University of Alabama made the decision of where to pursue their studies because of Nick Saban.

That is completely shameful.

The state has less money and bigger issues than Tennessee football does.

I hear ol' Senator Alexander is available later this month. He's from East Tennessee. Do you propose he take over the FB program and coach?
