How can we grade the hire when we haven't even passed out the syllabus yet?

I think everyone knows the syllabus. First assignment is for Butch Jones to make the right assistant coaching hires. After that on to finishing off the 2013 class.

A youngish guy with potential--but he's in a monster league. You can't begin to compare the big east with the SEC. That's why we were looking for splash. Instead we got a moderate ripple. He will need some magic coaching dust.

There's no way to know if he's a great recruiter. Butch Jones's fate will be determined by the staff he puts together.

Woulard is not the #1 QB prospect. He has no offer from Fla State. Calm down.

Impossible to know if he'll be successful in the SEC; there's nothing on which to base that prediction.

But, as was noted above, the thread is asking the grade of the hire, not the coach.

As such, if your 1st choice is an A, your 2nd is a B, 3rd is a C, and so on, then Jones likely falls into the D range.

However, even that grade says absolutely nothing about whether or not he'll be a great coach at UT; only time will determine that.

The hiring of Spurrier, Saban, Miles, Meyer, and Muschamp didn't scare anybody in the SEC either... at first.

He's not even a good recruiter. Cincy is currently @ 61 according to Scout. His highest recruits are 3*'s. He has 6 of them.

That doesn't say anything bad about his recruiting abilities; that says something about where he's trying to recruit to.

Nobody brings in the blue-chippers to the Big Least. If he can get 3* players to a Big Least program, getting 4* players to an SEC program should be simple.

and 10 2*'s. Actually he sucks at recruiting. Last year he had 22 3*'s and was 34th in the nation, but in 2011 he had a 4* and was 42nd in the nation!

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Tennessee hasn't got any more respect than any of the Big East teams. We have become a laughing stock. How many recruits will come to Tenn knowing this won't work and in 3 years we'll do it again (coaching search)

B to B+. I think he is an above average hire. On a 4.0 GPA scale I would say 3.5 where Gruden is the 5.0 guy that you wanted to hate. Stoops would be a 4.0. I don't think we did so bad.
