I said D. That was a pathetic game even if we did win. We played like the #3 team in 1-AA

We didnt do horrible in anything except redzone scoring. Defense stepped up and I am very surprised we only gave up 10 points and 282 yards.

typical first game. In fact, thank goodness for this game. We certainly will have lots of things to adjust between now and the UF game. We were a B today but we'll get to the A category in 2 weeks.

I voted C, but here's how I really feel.

Offense, overall B-

Offensive line C- sufficient enough on pass blocking, but poor run blocking in the middle.

Ainge D- After the first series he was lost. Forced two poorly thrown balls into interceptions. Didn't have a feel for the game.

Clausen A- He did miss a couple of open recievers and had a pick, which was mostly not his fault, but had the pass been thrown to the right side of the receiver's body it wouldn't have been a pick.

Backs B+
Riggs ran hard, but the blocking was poor in the middle. Backups showed some flashes but overall drug the performance of the backs down.

Recivers. D- Way, way, Way too many dropped passes. A blon asignment may have contributed to Ainge's second pick

Defense overall B+ Overall, held a solid UAB offense to 10 points. Made a couple of big turnovers that were the difference.

Secondary B- Allen's play was All-American. the younger dbs missed too many asignments and were out of position on far too many plays, but they were playing an excellent QB with some nice receivers.

Linebackers - B Some missed coverages and a penalty by Simon hurt big time on the interference call. Played the run very good and had great lateral pursuit to the sidelines.

Line - A What can you say. They were in the backfield a lot but couldn't close the deal, more a result of the quality of Hackne's play than their poor play. They stuffed the run time and again. The only thing that keeps this from being an A+ were the two very stupid personal foul calls.

Special Teams D+ No returns, missed a makeable field goal.

the only touchdown we gave up was after a bs call for passing interferance...........the ref's were making bad calls in the third quater. True we did not play at the top level, but it was the seaon opener, I would rather get the bugs out now instead of two weeks in gainsville. UAB was able to pass on our defense, but they have a very good quater back. They have been known to upset teams in the past, I am happy with a win, I gave them a B

I also gave an overall C. The bright spot is Clausen's performance in my mind. I had slight speculation on his abilities, but I have no doubt now. Disappointed in the performance of the offense in general and the secondary. Typical first game, but the score just too close for me. Lot's of room for improvement. We'll get there.

I gave them a C. Looked like everyone but the defense came out totally flat.

The fans get a D-. The fans were more flat than the team.

The band gets an F. Were they even playing? The band should be getting the 12th man involved in the game.

I wish we had another game before going to UF.

There's no reason to panic folks, not that anyone here is.

As I said elsewhere, we played what will likely (I hope) be the worst game of our season and UAB (and I don't mean this to take anything from their effort, they're tops in my book) played what may be the best game they'll play all year.

If UT plays up to its potential this game will look very, very good in UAB's SOS when bowl invites are mailed.

All in all it was a flat victory. But it goes under the W column, and in the end that is the MOST important thing.

we have a history of playing flat against these kinds of teams. we always are prepared for sec foes. no worries here. dont no why anyone would worry? ut is very good and talented and we will be fine.

Pretty good analysis. I think too many fans didn't appreciate how good UAB has a chance to be. Yes there are plenty of things to work on , but what you look for as a coach is the fact that when it was, excuse the term, "balls to the wall time", the defense bowed it's back and won the game. If everyone will recall, the heart of the '98 team was the D not the O and I think we've got a chance with this bunch to be as good as that bunch on D and maybe better on O.

an A for Jason Allen. He's the best Defensive player in the country. I watch him when we are on D, because he is always around the ball.
I'm not concerned...didn't you all see how simple the playcalling was? You'll see the real team in Gainesville. Season starts in 2 weeks.

No. I was watching on JP here in Dallas. We had 166 at the alumni game watching party. Largest crwod since the Miami game in Miami.

10 points in 5 minutes looked really easy, especially since UAB had only run one play at that point. However, they then just seemed to expect UAB to lay down.

I could not hear the fans or the band. Even the announcers commented on that. 75% of the crowd shots (of UT fans) showed them sitting on their hands.

:(

Well, as well documented in other threads on this board, the crowd looked and sounded good early, and then the Vols just didn't give us much to be excited about. We did get loud when the D needed it, but the band was wilted. It was sooooo hot out there and they were in those black uniforms. I'm not surprised they didn't play much. That being said, I have seen JP games before, and the crowd doesnt get pumped into the broadcast.

I was at the game today. And the fans were horrible. The Alumni side barely made a sound (the west side). I sit in the south end zone( end zone with JumboTron)and everyone was sitting on their hands :banghead: ! Usually that end zone is pretty loud. I don't understand why people go to the game and don't yell :realmad: !

Anyway, I gave Tenn a grade of C. AND I GIVE THE FANS A BIG FAT "F" :realmad:

I had to give them a C. I am optimistic though. They will work had for next couple of weeks and get it in high gear.

It wasn't only the sound, the visuals looked bad too. I was in one of those black uniforms the first year they appeared (they were orange & white prior to that) some 44 years ago, and once you get through the 7 - 8 minutes on the field it's all down hill. If a little heat can squash the school spirit the schools here in the SW wouldn't even have bands.

:dunno:
