The problem is Heard needs to play but looks so bad right now that getting him the experience he needs is costing us. So do you go with another guy and hurt Heard's confidence? Or keep playing Heard and hope he gets better?
This year he's our LT, but next year move his fatass to left guard.

Talent eventually comes to the forefront, hold on to the flashes he shows, even if they are few and far between, and wait for it to click. It will eventually and sometimes it happens at the most unexpected times.

Only if the person stays healthy and is motivated

I don’t see how he can be this bad after winning a starting job at LSU as a true freshman, earning freshman All-SEC honors, and earning a big NIL to come to either Tennessee and Ole Miss.

I’m no expert but the aforementioned evidence suggests that he’s simply not playing up to his ability right now, which could be the result of him playing through an injury or being out of shape… or both.

I wouldn’t be surprised if his performance improves as the season progresses.
He didn’t earn a starting spot at LSU. He played behind Campbell & Jones, both high draft picks in next draft. He started 1 game I believe (vs Auburn) due to injury. He didn’t want to sit another year behind those two is why he left.

He played in 12 games and started 1. Whether it was due to an injury or not, he earned it by beating out upper classmen.

LH is obviously still getting into game shape after the injury. But, how long should that take?

How often are O lineman a recruiting bust?

Easy to forget that Heard is a true sophomore, and the injury during fall camp clearly hampered him. He may well look like a different player by season’s end between playing himself into shape and getting more experience.

Give up on Heard now, and you’re giving up the chance to have any continuity in your offensive line next year. If you can bring him along and Umarov can take a guard spot next year, you only have three spots to fill with 6 or so true sophomores, at least three of whom the staff is high on, and the portal, plus an outside chance David Sanders is ready to push for playing time as a freshman. In other words, stay the course with Heard and it could shape up pretty decently next year. Without him, things look a lot more dicey.

Next year is when we really start to find out whether Glen can cut the mustard as a oline coach, imo.
Only problem is next year it’ll be the same story with another player, just give them time to _______ and next year is when things will turn the corner. But what’s missed is the players that leave/get drafted, and unforeseen injuries that will leave voids. Also it wouldn’t be too much fun not having our “generational” QB due to being injured if the glaring hole isn’t plugged. Not to mention the same QB now making bad decisions like in the video because he expects the protection to break down. You care about Heards confidence, I get it. But you are advocating protecting his confidence at the expense of the QB losing his confidence, QB getting injured, others trying to compensate, and wasting a year for the upperclassman that they can’t get back. But atleast it’s a throw away year to you it seems.

It’s kind of like people that always say “I want to be here in life before I get married/have kids/etc”, you’ll never do those things if you try and time it out with certain milestone before hand. It’s this mentality that leads to nothing getting done because the goal is right around the corner, so right now it’s ok to fall short.

Edit: just rereading your post makes me cringe. This idea that you look at this year as a throw away years is a terrible mindset. Just wait til next year and things will be nice. Until next year and issues arise, then we can rinse and repeat.

I’m not saying give up on Heard, but changes surely need to happen. He can get reps without taking the majority of them. He can also get more reps against opponents that aren’t as tough.

Look we might not be there this year to compete for a NC, but I will never get on the train of “just wait till next year” while we experiment. When Nico is taken off the field on a stretcher I hope he takes comfort in knowing that next year maybe he can get off a pass without running for his life or getting wrecked.

Easy, tiger. I didn’t mean to give the impression that I’m punting on this year. I’m saying Heard isn’t a finished product. That’s particularly true if he’s injured. That means he can improve over the course of this season, not just one year to the next. The coaches clearly think he gives us the best chance to win, taking short, long, and medium term into account. They can’t afford to change with the wind like us fans.

I’ve also seen people saying “let’s get Larry Johnson/Jesse Perry/whoever some snaps” as though Heard is an upperclassman who won’t be around next year. In other words, people looking ahead to next year.
