Jerod at MidwestSportsFans has written an emotionally charged blog post on Coach Martin (See here) that actually has me somewhat fired up about the guy. As I've stated before, if we had hired the waterboy at Prairie View A&M, I'd be ready to cheer him on and hope for the best. Instead, we got a well-regarded young coach that others decent (if not better) basketball programs would love to have.

But also in the story, Jerod talks about how some of us are making the Vol nation look stupid with our comments. For instance, Clay Bleeping Travis is tweeting like a dumbazz again, not to mention Steven Pearl (hacked. right.).

Keep it civil, folks!

The pulse on here has changed greatly in the last 2 hours....by tomorrow, this will be a great hire.

UT fans wanted Brad Stevens and got Cuonzo Martin. I understand the frustration in that viewpoint but Stevens wasn't coming to UT.

Now we have a coach with tons of potential who will probably play in front of an average of 15,000-20,000 fans in TBA next season.

Despite the railing against the fans, good article.

Tennessee fans, this may come as a shock to your elitist sensibilities, but you have proven tonight that you don’t deserve Cuonzo Martin. The least you could do is not wait until he’s winning to appreciate him.

That sums it up.

You see?
Unlike some on this board, this guy did his homework. This is what happens when you judge based on knee-jerk reactions in the heat of the moment. It just makes us all look spoiled rotten. But I digress...

I like the hire. I don't love the hire, but I think that Coach Zo has so much upside that he has the potential to be a great coach for us. Players who come to come to play for him WILL play hard, I can assure you.

Leave it to Clay Travis to make an ass of himself yet again. His twitter page is pure comedy.

This was a good article, but I think that the blogger undersells the Tennessee job, especially in comparison to the Purdue job. It becomes apparent that college basketball begins and ends in the BigTen according to that blogger, and every job outside of the conference is a weaker opportunity.

Honestly though, why should I care what the opinion of some second-rate journalist on a website that makes blogspot look good is?

Read this article about the Buzz Peterson hire to Wilmington..

Wilmington to hire Buzz Peterson GoVolsXtra

"Peterson was introduced Friday afternoon as the Seahawks’ ninth coach, ending the school’s lengthy search to replace Benny Moss, who was reassigned within the athletic department in January.

He has a track record of great success at every stop he’s made,” UNCW athletic director Kelly Mehrtens said of Peterson. “Buzz coaches with a lot of energy and passion, and has a great basketball pedigree.”

Sounds almost identical...

Needless to say, I couldn't care less what some jackass lost in Indiana thinks.

Hell of an article and one that should be a wakeup call to our fanbase. The last 5 hours have been an utter embarrassment and a truly classelss state of affairs. Let's shut our mouths and open our arms for Coach Martin and his family, because the moment he accepted that offer he became one of us.

It's pretty poor journalism, seeing he cites Clay Travis and Josh Ward as "fans" of the program, though they are hack journalists and not fans. I am not sure any fan -- a booster, season ticket-holder, etc -- is actually interviewed for the article. He props up a strawman to argue against it.

We could argue that Clay's remarks were those of a fan and not a journalist. Also, we may agree that the author is a blogger and not really a journalist.

But the point is how a decent man and a quality basketball coach is being maligned before he even gets to his first press conference. Who knows how well he will do, but the point is that he is the coach now and deserves our support, not our criticism.

Couldn't agree more. It's been embarrassing at times...

But maligned by individuals who are looking to get a rise out of an audience, and not interested in seriously questioning the hiring of Martin.

On twitter no less.

I appreciate the author's intent I suppose, but I haven't seen any real sophisticated criticism coming from journalists, and certainly no one has showed up at the airport to boo Martin that would warrant a "here's the other perspective" type pieces.

He has a point. UT fans can be the most ignorant fans in the nation when they try.

I'm going to laugh when the day comes that CCM and CDD are both perennial winning coaches that are competing for championships since they were both Hamilton hires, and so many people called for his head.

I think Ward was mentioned only by an anonymous Twitter user asking him a question, though that wasn't really made clear.

First off UT is replacing a guy went to the Elite 8 last year with a guy who didnt get past the 2nd round of the NIT. He might be a great coach, but his resume to this point is pretty sparse.

Second, Martin probably isnt the best coach available in the Missouri Valley much less division 1. Greg Marshall at WSU and Ben Jacobson at Northern Iowa have better resumes.

Sucks all the folks that dislike the hire making the whole fanbase look foolish. Jmo though.

The guy's been a HC for all of 3 years. He's won a regular season championship and one post-season championship. He took a team with 5 scholarship players from an 11-20 record to a 24-12 record.

I haven't done research on Marshall or Jacobson, but I am willing to make a hefty bet that their resume after just 3 years wasn't as impressive.
