His point about safety net programs is well taken.

But:

1) implying that the existence of those programs effectively ends the discussion is absurd since I think we ALL would agree that we would prefer recipients to be trained or educated so that they don't want or need such programs;

and 2) it demonstrates a lack of comprehension of the sense of despair some of these folks feel, and the compassion everyone else has for them, because we all know that there, but for the Grace of God ...

1) Those programs exist for the very poor. As he said, if there's a problem there you fix it. I am not against the programs for those who are at the very bottom and doubt many truly are. Unfortunately that % is blown up to be much greater than it actually is.

2) What do you want him to do- cry for them? We all know they're poor and that's why the money is sent in that direction. The programs exist and to waste time discussing things already in place is useless. I hope they feel some sort of despair and do something to get themselves out of that situation. Unfortunately it's not the case often enough

That's the whole point -- its bad wording.

And of course you have to put it in context of his image, which is as a guy that is so incredibly wealthy, never worked a day of physical labor in his life, etc., etc.

I predict soon we will see him in some photo montages, like, roping cattle, building cabins, maybe single handedly making a car.

This is all playing right into Obama's wheelhouse.

Because Obama is all those things?

I see nothing, at all, wrong with what Romney said. If the middle class prospers, everybody prospers.

Voters care about their 401k, home value and their kids college fund. They are aware that 4 more years of Obama means slow growth and a micromanaging govt, both of which are not helpful toward their 401k, home value and kids college fund. They dont care about sound bites. Google "Mitt Romney" and hit the news tab. Not 1 article on this BS quote.

They do care about these things, yes. But if you think they do not care about soundbites you are out of touch with political reality. Just click on any webpage dealing with politics, watch any news show, listen to any radio broadcast including talk radio, read any newspaper. Polls are done based on soundbites. Campaign ads are done on soundbites. Did you watch the debates? There was little substance. It was all based on driving soundbites that would be discussed on the news the next day. Watch Colbert or Stewart. Listen to any pundit. Look at most of the plans that come out from the candidates - quick, marketing driven nuggets like 9-9-9. Most Americans had absolutely NO clue what the substance was to this plan. It was just small numbers people latched on to.

And I took your challenge on the Google move. I see quite a few on the story. Just below the top link (his campaign site) is the actual quote.

The unfortunate reality is that in today's world, how a candidate presents themselves and how they are viewed by the public, is far more important than what they may actually be able to accomplish once they are elected.

I ain't voting Mitt and even I think the whole "I like firing people" thing was taken out of context unfairly.

That said, I hope his new coaching can teach him to carefully word things he says in campaign speeches.

You keep saying this but have nothing to back it

Romney is only polling ahead of Obama in about 15% of the polls, and the ones he is ahead in are within margin of error. Obama is ahead of Romney in a third of the major polls outside margin of error.

Romney's getting a bounce because the focus is on him as the frontrunner. Again, once he switches to campaign mode with Obama things will change. If your argument of Romney standing a chance is based on current nationwide polls, you really do not understand politics. A snapshot at one point in time had Perry as already in the White House. How is that working? Same for Pawlenty, Bachmann, Cain, and Newt. Flavor of the Month polling has no substance.

Funny how Romney has given massive amounts to charity relative to Newt, Obama etc but he'll be labeled the one that hates poor people.
