To be fair, Royal coached in a time where it was probably more competitive and all his national titles are really indisputable.

Not sure why that's an insider article. Who is the best coach for the state of Tennessee?

Pat

(he spelled her last name incorrectly)
I thought it was for football?

I wish they would make a list for football and men's basketball. It's too easy to find coaches that dominate in sports people don't care about.

I don't really like the fact that they went to about 3 states for women's basketball. Almost seems to downplay Neyland and our football program.

It only encompasses football and basketball. Pat, Geno, and C Viv were the only ones for women's, and I honestly can't disagree. All 3 are legendary at what they've done.

While that's true, we have the most successful head coach in Women's basketball history, and as such, is included in this list. If you polled all of America and asked for 3 facts about Neyland, my guess is you'd get lots of, "Tennessee's stadium is named after him," a few, "He was in the Army," and that's about it. Everyone knows Pat Summitt's name because of what she's done in women's basketball, not because of a stadium.

Yeah, but Rutgers has nothing else. I don't care about UCONN, but I don't think they have any options other than Calhoun. I'm sure many other states have coaches that have done great things in sports no one pays attention to. I think Tennessee should have had Neyland on the list. Leave the women's basketball to states that have nothing else, IMO.

The way I understood it, and I could very well have been wrong, was that it's based on where the coach was from.

EDIT: And I'm wrong. Neyland should be over Summitt.

All the more reason to include Neyland, IMO. I'd rather someone reading the list that doesn't know about Neyland find out about him than see Pat.

His blog isn't a charity for the history of a dying football program. The list was for the greatest coach, and they picked the right one. I'd go as far as to say that she's the women's basketball equivalent of Knute Rockne. Back when he was the coach, football wasn't what it is today. That doesn't mean he shouldn't be on the list.

I wouldn't be shocked if, after Summitt retires, awards are named after her. There will no longer be men's and women's Wooden winners.

It's not just charity. It's that Neyland is the best coach in Tennessee history, IMO. I would want people to think of Neyland when they think of Tennessee the same way people think about guys like Hayes and Bryant when they think of their respective schools.

I'd go so far as to say you have to be about 68 years old to clearly remember watching Neyland's last season coaching. That's why he's not a Woody Hayes or a Bear Bryant. If it weren't for Knute Rockne revolutionizing the forward pass and dying in a plane crash, he'd probably be an afterthought too. Regardless of what Neyland did for us, Pat Summitt's impact on women's sports supersedes Tennessee athletics.

Disagree. Without Neyland, who knows where Tennessee football would be?

And anyways, I think Neyland was just a better coach, anyways.

In the end, Neyland's real impact reaches to the Knox County limit. Girls across the country want to play basketball because of the revolution started by the Lady Vols basketball team.

And as for the latter, that's a bold statement. I don't know how old you are, but if I had to guess, you've never seen him coach.

You might be right, but that doesn't necessarily make Summitt a better coach.

I haven't. To be honest, I haven't seen Summitt coach too often, either.

Fair enough. All I can say is that when Summitt wins, it's not because her bad team is better than other bad teams. It's because she gets the best players, pits them against the best teams, and coaches the hell out of them. She's fantastic at what she does, and because of her ability to coach and her impact on all women's athletics, she gets the nod over Neyland. Agree to disagree.
