Griff's Post Season Breakdown

Presason ESPN writer poll shows Vols No. 24 -- too low? | Ask Griff | GoVolsXtra.com

Not sure how he doesn't consider Golden a for sure starter.

Anyone care to construct a depth chart based on some of this?

Depth charts gave been discussed ad nauseum since the season ended, but they are all a guess at this point besides the obvious starters. Here is my guess.

Starters
Golden, then Stanton (once eligible)
McBee, then McRae
Edwards, then Richardon
Maymon, Stokes
Stokes, then Hall, then Yemi

Moore may play spot minutes at any of the three guard positions. Reese may redshirt or transfer if he doesn't like his prospects of playing time as we add talent at the wing. Chievous is the wild card.

Griff is making it out like it's anybodies game but we know different. His breakdowns were spot on but Golden starting is just as important as Maymon IMO. If we, as fans, Griff, as a writer, can see what Golden needs to do (pass first, lead the team PG) then I'm pretty sure Golden and Martin are more than likely thinking the same thing and that will be his focus this offseason.

Also, no way Yemi or Hall starts over Stokes. He needs to cut the guy a small break (not that he was really hammering him or anything) but still....Stokes brought his HS moves to TBA because he had no other choice. He never got the chance to develop or have an offseason. If Griff didn't realize how much of a talent Stokes is the he needs to do his homework because I think Stokes will continue to take steps ahead of everyone on the team as the most talented player.

Agree. I can't wait to see how that plays out and what he brings to the court.

Griff is pretty much a hater until you prove him wrong several times over, and then he seems to have an unfailing love for you. Bruce Pearl for example. Griff kept doubting him and his first team at UT, even when they were 18-2, he still wasn't a believer. As the season went on, and in subsequent seasons, he became the biggest jock-sniffer for those players, Lofton and J. Smith particularly, and for Coach Pearl.

Saying Golden and stokes aren't for sure starters made me stop reading.
Idk, having Stokes, Maymon, Hall, Miller, and Yemi, you can really have a PF and a C instead of two PFs, like the last few games of the season. If Martin wants to go that route, I say start Maymon and Hall, and have Stokes off the bench. BUT Stokes and Maymon on the floor together is an absolute tandem.

I think it really just depends on how much of a step Stokes and his 20's make this offseason. If he is the player everyone thought he was, it would be really hard to not play both Maymon and Stokes together. And I agree...they seem to just click together. Stokes has excellent hands for a big man and neither seems selfish. They compliment each other very well.

Wait?

What?

You think we should not start Stokes next season?

Is this real life right now?

All I'm saying is that if we start Stokes, we'll have 2 PFs. It can definitely work, but if Martin wants to do the traditional PF and C, I would guess that Stokes comes off the bench.

Unless, of course, Stokes ends up taking Maymon's starting position. But I wouldn't bank on that at this point.

Stokes started this year even when we had Kenny.

Golden
McBee
?
Maymon
Stokes

There is only 1 ? on this team and that is who is going to replace Tatum. I would assume Edwards, but I dont know enough about him.

I think McRae or Richardson beat out mcbee as well. I definitely wouldn't say mcbee has his spot locked down in the starting rotation as you're insinuating. That 2 spot is as much of a question as the 3 spot.

McBee will be a senior leader though, and that can't be discounted. To me, McBee has hit his ceiling. You know what you have with him. McRae and Richardson can still improve a lot, and if they do, they most certainly could take that starting spot.

As CCM said I expect positions to be open for a battle. This may be blunt and some may not like it, but if mcbee is still starting at the 2 next year this team is not playing at its potential.

All my point was though originally was that I don't believe mcbee has the 2 spot locked up as the OP was suggesting. He was saying mcbee has as much of a lock on a starting spot as maymon stokes and golden, and I flat out disagree. He may end up being the starter but I don't believe he has it locked down.

If Maymon or stokes end up showing that they can consistently hit from outside and Moore or Chievous are consistent shooters from outside then coach may play 3 bigs in the starting lineup. Could happen.

I will be shocked if Stokes isn't starting next year. Remember that he was basically a high school senior with no college conditioning or practice when he joined the Vols midseason. Dude will be a STUD.

Never mind. You guys are not picking up what I'm laying down.

I get your point. I just think Martin will go with 2 PF and put his best 5 on the floor if he can. Kenny would have to make a big leap to be a better true 5 than Stokes is a out of place 5 in my opinion. And Martin has said that he 4 and the 5 do exactly the same thing in his offense so it doesn't really matter which is which.

I am actually a little intrigued to see if Kenny and Stokes can be on the floor at the same time. This would let Stokes finally get a defender that wasn't the other teams center. And since Hall can actually step out and hit a mid range jumper, I really would like to see a high low set with Kenny pulling the other teams biggest defender out just enough to let Stokes go one-on-one with the others teams PF instead of against the other teams center. If they can make this work, UT could go with basically a 3 man post rotation, with the exception of foul trouble (this is all assuming the Maymon plays most or all of his minutes in the post). Yemi really needs to get another year under his belt before he is truly ready to play significant minutes night in and night out
