I wouldn't look at last year as an example, Kelly was outcoached by a veteran and Masoli was out-QB'd (in fact, Masoli would have made 2008 Crompton look good). Kelly has been doing the "speed" thing since he arrived in 2007, but it is just now to the level where we can run it like we do, it's a bit of a system shock to operate at this intensity.

It's actually the same reason I don't think the Oregon offense would ever work in the NFL. It takes a commitment to conditioning, something you can do when you have an athlete for four years but not something when you deal with the front office too.

Look at Paul Westhead, his Loyola-Marymount basketball teams were something to behold, but it was too unconventional to ever work in the NBA for the reasons mentioned. You can take bits and pieces to succeed though, like some recent Phoenix Suns teams.

P.S. It just so happens Paul Westhead is now the women's basketball coach at Oregon. I wonder if he and Kelly get together to discuss conditioning techniques :)

It also depends on facing a slower, less athletic defense, which you probably won't find in the NFL.

I don't even think they would beat any national champion except maybe the 2002 Buckeyes and 2007 Tigers.

The OSU team played grind it out and win with defense. They would limit Oregon's time of possession and just slowly work their way downfield. It would be a huge test for Oregon.

2007 LSU = Glenn Dorsey taking handoffs in the backfield all evening.

I'm not so sure about 2007 LSU, just because they came out looking disinterested in half their games.

The 2002 Buckeyes did win with a defense that could provide Oregon with a real test, but in all honest, I didn't think they were that great of a team, and I watched them in just about every game. The personnel on that team seems to be a bit overrated just because they won. They really looked a lot like 10-4 team that just hit the jackpot that year, and even a little the next year. I know people will say that if they won that consistently it couldn't have been luck, but I'm not sure there's really much more to it than it was a solid team that pulled out an extremely lucky season.

I agree with you about the Buckeyes. However, that defense is better than any D OU has seen this year. Oregon's speed might eventually wear them down, but with the way the Bucknuts controlled the clock Oregon may not have gotten the opportunity to do that.

I don't know.

I'd certainly agree that there's no guaranteed victory. The 2002 Buckeyes certainly could win. I just don't trust their offense enough to feel confident about that.
