They basically took the population of Ohio and said that is their fan base. Took our population and divided it by half because they assume half of our population is a fan of vandy I guess.

If folks are interested then there is a body of literature that works to define fandom. My favorite model defines fans at a relatively low level.

Fans represent an audience segment who are largely disconnected and unorganized, but reliable consumers. Cultists are the next step up. Cultists organize themselves into communities and connect with one another regularly. Message board communities like this one or viewing clubs might be good examples. At the top level are enthusiasts, these are the community organizers who often exist within smaller sub-communities and often work together. The moderators of boards like this one might offer a good example.

All are members of larger audiences. This doesn’t really answer the question of “true fans” but I figured some folks might find it interesting.

Listen, if you’re still a Vol after seasons 2007 - 2020, you a Vol homie. That was rough! I’m old enough to remember the good ole days.

Yeah I know….I was just surprised to see freaking Wisconsin and Stanford ahead of TN…. And they didn’t mention what the basis of the study was
