Guitars.. What you got?

Picked up this guy in the spring, much more enjoyable to play than my starter fender was.

Still a lot to learn, I jumped into lots of Marty Music stuff in the fall and though I got a lot better I still didn't grasp "What exactly am I doing".

Have been doing the Scotty West classes and am just awestruck with how much I've learned in 3 hours.

Hey, do any of the guitar players in here use an amplug? I'm in the market for one but I want to get one that the overdrive doesn't sound like a swarm of bees. Has anyone here had any experience with them and do any stand out from the pack? Thanks!

My new one. I am not much of a player, but I can tell it has made my playing better.

I LOVE Gretsch guitars! I have two actually, a Jet and a South Korean made G5420 Electromatic hollow body (It looks similar to yours but in a very pale green color). It had a Bigsby but I don't care for them, so I replaced it with a stop tail. I have far fewer tuning issues with it now.

Just pulled the trigger on an American Ultra ii Telecaster in Texas Tea. Will be much nicer than my playing capabilities ever will be but I was looking for a Tele and slowly moved up the chain from a Player ii to American Professional ii to the Ultra ii. I saw it in person at Guitar Center and it's magnificent. Would have bought there but bought direct from Fender for about $100 in savings - add to that another net $70 in savings from signing up for Fender Play. Even if I never use the Fender Play it saved me cash and is 10% off anything from them (except Custom Shop) and I have my eye on a Vintera Mustang...

I'll post a pic when I get it. Meanwhile, this video shows it along with this awesome color. Congrats to me!

Nice! I just bought my first Telecaster. I got the American Vintage II 63’. I don’t know why it took so long to get a Tele. Fantastic guitars!

I have set a few goals for the year before I complete 50 orbits around the sun. Learning the banjo is one of them. One week in and I'm making progress. The right hand is easy, just new chord patterns. The left thumb patterns and finger picks have been challenging. Loving it though.

Here's the new hardware:

I used Christmas money to buy an Epiphone SG with the original 60s pick guard and red color. I'm so happy with it! I considered waiting longer to get the Gibson version, but I read that the biggest differences are the pickups not having as bright a sound (which can be changed out) and heavier tuning hardware causing more neck-dive (which can be changed out). I'm not experiencing a problem with either, so I'm just loving the better tone in the mid-range!

Does anybody else jam with backing tracks from YouTube, etc.? I've found it so useful! You can find ones with the chord progression for a lot of songs, but they're named generically.
I do! I like “Now You Shred” and “Samurai Jam Tracks” on YouTube. Also great if you have a headphone amp that will sync with your phone for late night jamming.

I just looked through my played list and 80%+ are Now You Shred. The funky mixolydian jam and Lord of This World jam are really fun.

Agreed on the headphone amp. I've got the VOX AC60 headphone amp and love it! I have a Bluetooth speaker with an 1/8" stereo input that doesn't have too much latency, so I often play through it with the backing track playing from my computer speakers.

Yessir!! If it’s the Dead’s Fire on the Mtn mixolydian jam, I am a big fan of that one!

If you ever decide to change the pickups, skip the Gibson offerings and check out some boutique PAF pickups. They're usually a similar price new as Gibson pickups but they're almost always better. OX4, Bare Knuckle, Magfrag, Mojo, Tyson Tone, and many others are great. You can usually snag a deal on some used pickups on Reverb to save some money since some people love testing pickups. A great low wind unpotted PAF is magic in an SG. They just add so much clarity and dynamics...no mud and the natural resonance of the guitar comes through. The only downside can be feedback, but that's easy to avoid and actually a plus when it's controlled.

so dropped 150 for some guitar tools a couple of months ago and now dropping another 250. Gonna be a luthier..looks like.

Went to GC other day and picked up an Epiphone and the bends were so slinky, and I thought why cant I have that..about 3 semitones easier..I just cant figure it out..set my neck relief, action, bridge and raised tailpiece..dont want to raise it too high as it will stress the studs. Could try top wrapping. Nut sauce didnt do squat. Could drop to .009s but dont think it will make big difference,

Will try fret leveling, crowning, and polish as they are flat at 40 years old, and saddle filing. At this money, not far from buying the dang Epiphone.

I know some acoustic luthiers prefer the nut to have a more squared off back end (headstock side) to provide a little more felt tension and snap to the sound. For clients who prefer a little less string tension and a more rounded attack they will round that side of the nut. The nut slots could also be too shallow and/or need a little filing so the strings can move through them a little smoother.

I have some nut files so will give it a go..I bought a new bridge as well so will have to file the saddles.
Havent even started the project..The flat frets and crowning are my biggest worry. I assume my guitar is a 40 year old fretless wonder, as there has never been a crown, and not sure if it would mess them up..they have nibs on bevels, but shouldnt affect them.

I have used them in the key of A and A minor. I like the ones that are numbered and highlight the root note.

Ordered an Atkin J43 in early December and finally got it a few weeks ago. Baked Adirondack top and mahogany back and sides. It's based on a Gibson J45 but the top is built a little lighter to be more responsive and have a little more low end. I was looking for a good strummer and something that does folk song fingerpicking really well and this nails it.
