In the context of their times... states were more important to the citizen than the federal gov't... the "militia" had just thrown off an unjust central gov't... private ownership of weapons was part and parcel to the concept of militia.

IPOrange nailed it. The biggest reason for the 2nd Amendment wasn't sporting, home protection, or even protection from outside enemies. The idea was to provide an effective check against the central gov't trying to seize too much power again.

Chicago Approves Tough New Handgun Restrictions/

The new city ordinance bans gun shops in Chicago and prohibits gun owners from stepping outside their homes, even onto their porches or garages, with a handgun.

The arrogance of politicians feeling they can tell citizens they can't step into their own garage with a legal handgun, even after the recent SCOTUS ruling! I suppose they would prefer Dad clean his guns at the kitchen table? Knuckleheads!!!
