Americans buy record numbers of guns for Christmas - Telegraph

According to the FBI, over 1.5 million background checks on customers were requested by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in December. Nearly 500,000 of those were in the six days before Christmas.

It was the highest number ever in a single month, surpassing the previous record set in November.

On Dec 23 alone there were 102,222 background checks, making it the second busiest single day for buying guns in history.

The actual number of guns bought may have been even higher if individual customers took home more than one each.

Did sales jump for assault rifles as well?

In your mind, is that a good thing?

What is the difference? The classic media line "assault rifles" is used way to much. Assault rifles are fully automatic and have been illegal since 1934. They require a class 3 license to own.

How come the highest crime areas are where guns are banned?......hmmm

GS:

Since you have decided not to respond to my questions, I will assume that
you do think that individuals should have the right to own assault rifles or modified assault rifles. The only use of such a weapon is to inflict violence on other persons. So, you are advocating for violence, are you not?

If you say that you are simply advocating for home defense then why not first encourage individuals to fortify their homes?

As I understand you, though, I surmise that you would rather a theif, burglar, rapist, or murderer break into a home so that the homeowner can shoot him. This is something you have strongy espoused elsewhere that such a person deserves.

What it boils down to, then, is that you are espousing violence. Yet, you absolutey hate Islam because you think that Islm can do nothing other than preach violence. Unfortunately, you will fail to see th hypocrisy.

I think you may have a faulty assumption or two.

I am totally non-violent, but I am totally pro-freedom. I can advocate for your right to own guns, any one you choose, from a freedom perspective, without being for their use against humans. I am also against drug use, but I will advocate for your right to own/grow/use/sell/buy them as you see fit. I also believe that Islam is a false religion, but I will advocate for your right to practice it.

Or are you just saying that gs is unable to hold such viewpoints?

Wrong. I use my AR-15 for coyote hunting, recreational target shooting, and home defense.

I'm guessing you won't hear much anti-gun rhetoric in the next election or what you do hear will be carefully caveated.

I am opposed to assault rifle ownership, but support the right of individuals to own them. I will not celebrate that ownership, though.

GS has a problem with internal consistency though when he celebrates the increase of violent instruments yet derides persons for preaching violence.

There is certainly a right to do so; I do not see this as a necessary cost, though.

I think all law enforcement should be post-crime. Aside from that, I am all for neighbors coming together to establish watches. Ultimately, though, if all LE is non-preventive, then LE is only used to investigate, serve warrants, and arrest. Coupled with my philosophy re: crime, I see a need for a heavily armed force to b few and far between; further, such a need could be met by the formation of an armed mob in cases where great force is needed.

While I think I know where you're going with this I'm uncomfortable with the idea of "instruments" being used in the association you make. A person with dozens of weapons and thousands of rounds of ammo can lead a perfectly peaceful existence when another can be a brutally violent individual with only a baseball bat or even their bare hands.

Preaching violence (for whatever cause) is, IMHO, an altogether different and separate issue from weapon ownership.

Encouraging individuals to purchase instruments primarily used to inflict violence against other humans is analogous to preaching violence. Neither is committing violence, they are simply empowering persons to commit violence.

I also find it interesting that many who are fervently opposed to any sort of gun control are against nuclear weapon proliferation. Governments are simply collections of persons and weapons are weapons.
