Guns Make Men Seem Bigger

When it comes to shotguns, don't believe the Hollywood crap. If you are using a shotgun inside your house, on a person that intends to do harm to you or you're family. You cannot spray and pray, you hear "you don't even have to aim with a shotgun" at close distances a shotgun is like a rifle, you have to use the sights, the actual shot will not open up very big at say 20' you have to use the sights. When it comes to shotguns, the only thing consistent about them, is just how in-consistent they really are.

I assume you're talking long barrel?

No, 18" or 20" barrel. Most people usually when they measure off the distances inside their home, then go to the range with their shotgun and shoot those distances are usually shocked how tight the pattern is between 15' to 20'

So the notion of being able to just hip shoot a round and take out a whole wall, as in the movies is not only inaccurate, but very dangerous to the average homeowner who only buys a shotgun for home defense, and will never put it through it's paces on the range.
Cheers

Garbage quality video but informative.

10 meters or less and you're dead. How big is your house?

A house down the street was broken into a few nights ago. Now my woman wants me to get a gun. I wouldn't be opposed to owning a handgun, but would choose not to have one if given the choice straight up.

What should I do?

I think every home should have a pump shotgun. I have fire extinguishers in my house just in case I need them.I have a spare tire in my trunk just in case. I have health insurance just in case. The reason for a pump shotgun is the sound it makes when you rack one of those 3 inch magnum shells in the chamber it will put the fear of God in your heart. Kind of like the rattle of a rattle snake warning you before it strikes.

I just have @ 100 different swords, knives and chinese stars hidden in my house and on my property. If someone were to come in my house, stars come from various angles like lasers and will tear them up. My dog even has a knife and has been trained to slice the achilles of an intruder, and my cat is trained to ammonia pee on them when they fall.

Meh, get back to me when you've got sharks with frickin lasers on their foreheads.

Average size house. Point is, if you are gonna employ a shotgun inside you're house, you should know what its going to do. Of course, this does not even get into the threat moving around or anything like that. Most people are not going to just stand there and look like a human silhouette target and let you shoot them. Then add to all of this the fact that your heart beat will be going 90 mph. All i am saying is, if you are going to use it, practice with it.

More important that all the what gun/what ammo/what holster/etc considerations combined.

I think taking your gun to the range now and again is a given task to owning any gun. I've been to the range a time or two in my days.

Your 2 bold statements are a little hazy. Are you able to shoot real people at your range or are you shooting at silhouette targets?

I'm just saying that a person with very little training can hit a target moving or stationary very easily with a shotgun.

Normally shooting at moving silhouette targets, or moving steel targets.

You would be shocked at the number of people that go out and buy a gun and suddenly think they are ready, just because they have a gun.
You're bold comment is very interesting, i have seen much different results.

adrenaline kicks in hard in a real life combat situation and easy functions become difficult. best to practice, and practice often.

Every officer I've talked to that has opened fire says almost everything goes out the window when you shoot someone for the first time.

I just really really really really hope I'm never in a situation like that.

When I was running a nightclub, we had a life and death situation go down in the club. I can honestly say things were sllwing down and speeding up in my head all at the same time. Half of what I did was reaction and the other half was sheer luck. There was no planning on my next move.

Gross motor skills. Another reason I believe the shotgun is an ideal weapon for home defense. Is it perfect, no...but it's relatively simple to use, and very effective. Especially in relation to a handgun.

These reasons are why I like to load the first 2 rounds with nonlethal loads. Gives my wifes reluctant finger (and mind) time to get used to the idea so round 3 can go center mass.

I have a turkey load first followed by buckshot (and plug is removed). May be nervous on the first shot so I gave myself a little extra spread

Here's a good option. If you ever need to use it, you don't have to worry about a bullet going through a wall and hitting someone down the block. Also, point and shoot. No precise aiming necessary.

That's a mossberg persuader...I own one. Thumb safety. Best home defense weapon ever.

FNH 57 for home defense. Low collateral damage. Not a shotgun fan at all for a PDW, would rather use my PS90 or my MSAR if a rifle had to be deployed inside.

Name another weapon system that an individual who's job isn't to kill people can engage an enemy in CQB and have greater success than the shotgun. Name just one high speed.

I thought we were just talking about the average person. The only way around that is to train, train and train some more. Realistic situations are ideal.
