Guys We're Still In On

Rex, you're a pastor, right? What does the Bible teach about hopelessness, pessimism, and knee-jerk negativity?

I admit readily that this year doesn't look good and may well end bad. But either way it won't be the end of the world or even of UT football. They'll play next fall. If CPF made good hires and Chavis gets himself together again, this weak class will probably be sandwiched between two great ones and all will be fine.

If he made bad hires then he probably will have to look for an honorable way to retire... and we'll get to see if recruiting to UT really IS as easy as some seem to think.

if Tennessee football has existed 2000+ years ago you might find those things in the bible. :) Look, my posts, beleive it or not, are motivated by my love for the university. I see a problem and I cannot help but comment upon it. You dont spend as much time as I do here without a genuine love for the school and it's teams. I've donated to the school. I've been to countless games. I went to school on the Hill, joined a frat there, kissed a girl under the torch bearer, and had some of the best times of my life in K-Vegas. I cant tell you how many times my dad and I, just the 2 of us, rode from Hendersonville to Knoxville to see games, leaving at 4am, stopping in Harriman at the Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Make no mistake I love Tennessee. Maybe alot of my comments are knee-jerk, but in all honesty I can thelp myself sometimes. I just want us to excel so badly. I see UF, UGA, Bama, & LSU separating from us and it concerns me greatly. Maybe it's the nature of my work. I cannot sit idly by and watch someone's life go down the drain. I have to take some action, expend the words, make the extra effort. Maybe some of that has bled over to my posts. If I've offended anyone, well, it was never my intent.

As far as Tennessee football, maybe I should have more hope.

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

I’ve got to agree with sjt….turn the panic button down a little…..I agree too that recruiting is one of the critical steps to building championship teams….but one bad year is not going to ruin Tennessee football…..TN made some good hires this year….Let them do their job on the field & they’ll recruite….give them a chance.

Here are some final Rival team recruiting rankings for a couple of teams that finished in the top ten this year [for 2007, 2006 & 2005]
o Ohio State – 15th, 12th & 12th
o Virginia Tech – 29th, 32nd & 14th
o Missouri – 33rd, 47th,& 39th
o Kansas – 50th, 38th & 48th

Rex, I envy your ability to get to games. We lived close enough but my dad never had that kind of time for things like that when I was growing up. I've lived out of the area for most of my adult life.

I never doubted your loyalties... I just think you are getting a little too carried away over things that haven't happened yet.

If you were counselling a couple that was headed for trouble... would you predict a train wreck for them? Would you accentuate only the negative things?

You post some great objective criticism for the program and CPF sometimes. I've seen you post when things that made you look downright giddy.

I really like the hopeful but critical Rexvol... not so much the hopeless and negative Rexvol.

I say this while having real apprehension about this recruiting year...

The schools you mentioned in the best of years will compete with or beat UT in the recruiting rankings game as long as their fanbase is excited and not down on the coach. All of them have better recruiting bases than UT. UF's is better by several orders of magnitude... but UGA probably has the best situation.

Georgia plays great HS football and UGA is unrivaled in the state for fan loyalty except maybe for the very southern portion that might be split with UF and the Columbus/LaGrange area that has geographical and business ties to Auburn-Opelika. UT does have a following in N Georgia but that isn't the recruit rich area.

UT has to be creative in its recruiting. They have to make the most of the recruits they get... and even more in the future, CPF better keep a staff that can coach kids up.

PS- I don't think it was by accident that he hired a coach from Va. Va has long been decent for UT... with Va Tech really never taking that next leap and UVA without much of a tradition... Va talent could replace what UT is losing to Bama and some of the other SEC programs that are upgrading.

Rex is right about one thing it will show up on the field. All those teams you mentioned are from weaker conferences. These classes are going to hurt. We have never been known for great coaching. It seems if we want to compete in the next few years that will have to change. I'am going to wait a week or so cpf has been known as a closer. He may pull a rabbit out of the hat. But it is seeming less likely every day and every time we lose another recruit.

I'm with rex on this one...the most disheartening thing is we are losing battles we should be winning...

clemson? we're losing 4 star players to...clemson??? as in the acc clemson???

Yeah, imagine that. A kid, born and raised in South Carolina, who chooses to attend the best football school in his home state. Unbelievable.

I do think that the stability of this coaching staff is probably hurting UT's recruiting.

Fulmer's job is safe...but, no one would really be surprised to see him retire if the Vols won a championship next year. He's clearly nearing the end of his career at UT.

At LSU, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, the coaches aren't anywhere near retiring...they're all younger and they're probably all telling recruits not to consider UT because Fulmer won't be there to see them graduate.

Now, I'm not saying I want to get rid of Fulmer and get a young coach here...that's not what I'm saying at all. I'm just positive that Richt, Meyer, Saban, and Miles plan on coaching longer than Fulmer...and I'm sure they make a point to emphasize that to UT recruits.

Good point. I'am sure that statement has been used often this recruiting season.

I'm not saying it won't show up on the field. Last year's class will carry this class. Also, just because someone is rated 2* or 3* doesn't mean they will suck. I do agree though, if we don't finish this class out strong it will show up on the field later. Not next year, but later on. Hopefully, our coaches on O and D can coach the "less talented" players up.

Yes, I can envision all of those coaches selling their recruits on the instability of our program and the fact Fulmer may not be there for two or three more years.

Sure Bama has S "The Coach", gators have Meyer, LSU has Miles and UGAly mutts have Richt. They are great young coaches with promising careers. Hopefully our coaching staff is smart enough to reiterate that Saban,Meyer and Miles go through jobs like Paris Hilton goes thru boyfriends. Richt, on the other hand, has put together solid program. I feel that CFP can still close this one by meeting the needs of this recruiting class and maybe snagging a couple of great prospects like RB Davis.

It's probably worth pointing out that Saban isn't really a "young" coach. He's only a year younger than Fulmer.

But perception is powerful...and it's perceived that Fulmer is on the last leg of his career...and it's perceived that Saban will be coaching for a long time to come.
