Obama Waffles, Another Day, Another Racist Attack

It is not that I'm surprised by the racially-charged phrasing and downright racist images being used in the campaign against Barack Obama.

What unsettles me most is that so many of my fellow Americans find it not only acceptable, but amusing, appropriate and fair to attack his black identity.

"Obama Waffles" is the latest example of Jim Crow racist images cynically cast as legitimate political satire.

The products were on display at the Values Voters Summit that was hosted by a conservative Christian group. The bad news is that at least according to its creators, the product was selling like, well...um, hotcakes.

I think it is truly a tasteless and offensive thing. Even if we did not have the issues we happen to have in this year's election, it would still be bad. But especially given the heightened sensitivity to such things in this particular cycle, it should be taken down and an apology issued immediately.

How is accusing a politician of waffling seen as racist? We will see race card on a daily basis if he is elected.

In short, if you are a non christian it is ok to hang Sarah Palin from your house.

come on, OE. cut the crap. It is not "ok" for anyone to hang Sarah Palin (or anyone else) from your house or from any location. This has nothing to do with the messenger, and everything to do with the message. It's unacceptable, and we should criticize it because it violates our standards of decency - for many reasons, not the least of which it harkens back to a backward, inhumane time when we "got off" watching our enemies suffer their deaths in front of our very eyes.

but also, cut the whining. are you complaining that you, as a Christian, do not get the same treatment when expressing your opinions that a non-Christian does? Do you even know the religious affiliation of the people who displayed this unacceptable mannequin? Are you assuming they're not Christian? And are you assuming that makes it "ok," but if a Christian did something similar they'd be condemned?

Nobody owns the moral high ground. We all do have a right and responsibility to criticize anything that doesn't pass basic decency standards. This display falls in that list, and as a supposedly "liberal" Christian, I condemn it.

One other point - you're comparing an act of vandalism on University Property to the act of a homeowner on his own private property. One is illegal and breaks University rules. The other is protected by the 1st amendment.

I believe the homeowner should take it down and apologize. But the comparison to what happened in Oregon is off-base.

That was the entire point of the post.

Thanks for playing....

so you were being sarcastic in the previous post, or now you're backpedaling?

Regardless, I'm sick and tired of victimization - on all sides. I'm sick of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton saying that white people are always keeping black people down. I'm sick of Christian whiners saying things like "they're taking away Christmas by calling it X-mas and saying 'Happy Holidays.'" I'm sick of non-religious people thinking religion tramples on their freedoms while religious people think the non-religious are trampling on their freedoms. It's all over the place.

Enjoy your freedoms and let others enjoy theirs.

1.) The only important thing is that I know.

:eek:k:

2.) Agree, not by government intervention.
