I was disappointed that it did not work out for CDS.... my expectations were pretty low at the time. Like hope we get to Hoover low.

Me too, he got us there a couple times, heartbreaking as it was, but his kid is on staff now, so it wasn’t all for not. I live in Knoxville, obviously, I have never heard a single person speak ill of him.

I think everyone was super excited whenever DS was hired, myself included. Unfortunately, to win in the SEC you have to hit for power and his teams never did that. I still think he was a great hire at the time, just didn’t work out like we had all hoped.

Whenever Tony was hired I don’t think there was a ton of excitement. Yeah he had been a part of some great programs but it was his first time being the head coach. The fanbase just wanted to field a competitive team that wasn’t going to be going into the last weekend of the season hoping to make the SECT. He has far exceeded anyone’s expectations and in such a short amount of time. Coaches like him don’t come around very often. He has unmatched work ethic, great with the players, great with the media, great with the fans. He just gets it. All of it. As a fanbase we really hit the jackpot with Tony, and he isn’t even in his 50s yet. Truly remarkable what he has done. Any program in the country would be happy to have him, we are just the lucky ones that get to enjoy the ride.

The other thing about CDS…Simcox, Stewart, Senzel, Maddox, so many others, Moberg, and it was so hard to watch the streams, so hard to follow in summer ball, now it’s easy, but I try not to forget those players, all good kids.

This question is for everyone.

For people that have been following the program since Tony was hired, when did it sink in that this turned out to be an excellent hire?

Oh yes those kids were awesome. I remember watching the MLB draft to see Senzel go at the top. Very exciting.

I was cautiously optimistic after Year 1. Had a 5 win increase in conference wins and had us being competitive. Year 2 I was through the roof. He gave us our first NCAAT berth in nearly 15 years. That’s when I was fully on the Tony train.

For me, I think believing was a process but no single moment. As good seasons happened and the wins mounted, I slowly began to understand we had someone special.

All the things he accomplished were accomplished against all odds. The way he has ripped through the SEC and established us in this league is truly amazing.

During his Monday interview on Sports Talk, Coach V said that people didn’t need to worry about him leaving for anywhere else. He loves it here, and even bought his folks some property here.

I’d say we have our head coach for the foreseeable future. 😁 What a program changing hire he has been!
Would you happen to have a link? Would love to listen. Thx

I haven't listened to it, but I assume this is the interview.

I’m curious, who all was considered for the job? Only thing I was able to find was the coach for South Alabama Mark Calvi turned our offer down. What surprises me is he must have been a hot candidate at the time and 7 years later he is still there.

actually @TN_gal 's post was from 2022. The one from Monday is great though. @MAD won't ever let a good thread die young.

Thank you, this thread has some great stuff.

This looks like a fun thread too.

Love your post 66.

This is why I give Mr. Currie a "B" here...Bama got their guy locked up ASAP...then he went after Calvi but didn't get him, for whatever reason...but he got off the mat and made a solid hire.

I had said all along a current SEC assistant that is a good recruiter is the way I would go if I had the power...we got that. It's still a crap shoot, just gonna have to back the hire and hope for the best.

GBO!!!

If yer here long enough, there’s always something that will come back to haunt. I don’t take that as one of those, but I’ve had my fair share of those and eaten my fair share of crow. It really don’t matter how it gets served up, just have to eat it.
