Have we really lost sight.

Some people honestly thought Dooley had stocked the roster; I remember when Jones was hired reading posts that said Dooley had laid the foundation, Jones inherited a far better situation than Dooley did - and that all we needed was a good coach and we could win as many as 8 games this year. People said we'd truck Mizzou & Auburn and our best chance at an upset was against USCe, some said UGA. Theeeen the whole "we'll beat Oregon because we're just like Stanford" talk began. Oh how people were fascinated with the Oregon game.

Aside from Mizzou's turnaround this year (and the shellacking we received from them), this season has gone exactly as expected. USCe was still our best shot at an upset (and we got it), and most of us knew we'd lose to Auburn because Auburn truly DID have a great team last year that was simply mismanaged. They have recruited extremely well in recent years.

I'm tired of waiting for wins, but Robert Neyland couldn't get this team to win 8 games this year. Jones has to get the right players here in order to be successful.

Of where we are as a program? Lets be honest fellow VOLS, we aren't going 14-0 any time soon. It's going to take some time 3 years maybe even 4 before Tennessee. Is even taken seriously. But if you fire Butch and keep firing assistants it's just going to set us back even more. So I say to you VolNation back this coach and these assistants and I tell you, you won't regret it in the long run. Go Vols! :hi:

Just to clarify when I say fire butch I'm talking like in a couple years if we are like 7-5. Folks will say fire butch and we are never going to get back to our winning ways if we don't keep a coach.

I've never had any illusion that it WOULD NOT take at least 3 years. It's not just the talent level and getting the players up to speed in Butch's system and waiting for recruiting to kick in, it's also some of the specifics about the timing of it all.

By which I mean, CP, Hunter and Bray all jumping early to the NFL this year, followed by the loss of most or all of our Oline next year along with McCullers and possibly AJ.

Just bad timing on Butch's part. Had he inherited Bray, CP and Hunter things would be much funner this year (though I am not sure about Bray running the read option lol...and I am of course ignoring that he would be ineligible).

2008 5-7
2009 7-6
2010 6-7
2011 5-7
2012 5-7

Right now 8 wins sounds great to me.

8 wins MINIMUM...worst case 8 wins, etc.

To say that we win at least 8 is much better than our recent history.

8 wins may seem "great" to some of you, but it's really not on the whole college football landscape.

Absolutely! Bama and UF have proven that keeping subpar coaches on the payroll is the road to championships!

We didn't get bad over night, we won't get good over night.

If he is 7-5 or 8-4 by the end of his contract then I say get rid of him. If you'd settle for that, I have no idea what to tell you. By then he should have at least rebuilt the roster with some talent and have his system in place. Anything less than 9 wins is unacceptable, and that's only if he is still recruiting lights out like he is now. The goal is always championships, not to be slightly better than sucking.

Everyone shows the records of great coaches in their first year while they aren't very good. Put up their records from year two and three. There is always vast improvement.

Um have you been here after the past few games? Half of the threads are about firing Butch and how he's just a big east coach who isn't ready for sec blah blah blah.

What? I've seen some complaining, but I don't remember seeing a single post that called for BJ's firing. No one is THAT stupid.

I agree it's no where near where we want our program to be. That being said we are at a point in our program that 8 wins would definitely show signs of improvement to the fan base along keep recruits excited about coming here.

Please note "the word -- minimum"
Please note "did not say great"

Thanks,

I was originally thinking it would be 2016 to see the full turn around of the program - but Butch has already found a lot of junior college pieces and recruits that are similar to North and Sutton who can step in and help day one. It is very conceivable that we will win 9 or 10 in 2015 - it has been a while since I looked at the schedule but that is when it will be apparent to everyone that the tide has turned.

( Hate to use tide - let's say that the wind has shifted and momentum has swung in an Orange direction )

Just to be clear...are you being sarcastic, and saying that Butch is a subpar coach?

I don't have enough info yet to determine if CBJ is a subpar SEC coach -- there are some positives, and also some negatives. Things will be much more clear next year and especially year 3.

My comment is directed at the OP seemingly stating that stability is paramount, and that it trumps W-L.
