Why?

If you don't know that the food is riddled with sodium and saturated fat..........

nevermind....

Better get used to the nanny state.....

It also would require calorie counts from vending machines, buffets, alcoholic drink menus and drive-through restaurants.

Calorie counts to be required on menus nationwide - latimes.com

It just keeps getting better and better.

I don't see how mom and pop or other small restaurants can afford to have the calorie count of all their menu items determined (I dent read the link so I don't know if they are exempted).

mom and pops seem to be exempt, but it seems to be far more reaching than the california law.

If you didn't read the link, why bother responding?

Oh boo hoo. I couldn't open the link on my phone. At least I disclosed that I hadn't read it (I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have done the same). I figured that I had sufficient information to put forth my opinion since I've actually read (rather skimmed) the bills and completely missed this entire section. If it bothered you, then just skip my post next time.

While I can see the supposed purpose, more mandates on your food mean higher prices for it. I guess if we can't afford to eat we'll all be skinny.

Maybe the guy who was laid off for 3 years can get the job as calorie-writer-downer.

Honestly, being obese should be punishable by fine and/or imprisonment. If the goal is to "control" healthcare costs and obesity is an enormous catalyst for health issues then only makes sense to do so. We've just proven that nothing is off the table.

we can't charge more for smokers, for alcoholics, or for fat people. it's ridiculous.

the problem with using obesity or weight as a surrogate for HC costs is that it is not anywhere near a perfect correlation.

Smoking and drinking are much more linked to HC costs than obesity alone. Some fat people are in ill health; some are in good health. Likewise, some thin people are in ill health and some in good health.

It's akin to Afirmative Action. Your skin color doesn't dictate your opportunity - it may be related but there are enough exceptions to argue against using a demographic trait only as the criteria.

It was a joke professor, as if I would support something like that. Additionally, while your answer is very well thought out and written it misses one point. Which is that government makes good decisions when addressing problems such as this. We just witnessed their "solution."

Just to be clear, is the problem here that the governemnt is doing something we should do, the conomics, what?

Personally, I don't see a problem with people actually knowing how much crap they are stuffing in their mouths.
