time to take this loss and get better in the off-season. I think these gals did a great job and laid it all on the line. I don't even follow softball really, but I know enough to know that there's teams out there like Arizona, Washington, UCLA, etc. that are perennially good, and to be up there just one game away from the Championship says a lot. Gotta get better now, and go do it again next year, but this time--walk away winners. GO VOLS!!!:good!:

Not blaming umps for the loss, we lacked a little offensively all day; but man the umpires as a whole (not just in this game but in others I have seen this world series) just sucked out loud. I did not know a lot of the rules that they had just for womens softball but man some of them were enforced like the celebration for a TD in college football.
I mean how do you miss a foul tipped ball that was plain as day. I will give credit for over turning the one call to get it right but other than that.

I really hope the umpiring is usually better than that but I don't know why it would be...it is the freaking world series.

They was in the winners bracket and have to lose twice so they still have a chance.

I thought our girls did a fantastic job! I know we're Vols and we're spoiled rotten, but give me a break. I mean creeping hell, our pitcher barely has all her pubic hair, the majority of our other stars are Freshmen or Sophomores, and there's a rumor around K-ville that it wasn't that Grieves was lying earlier this season when she announced she was engaged but that her secret beau is the Tooth Fairy.

To put it in CFB terms, Ivy Renfroe (& her gals) did better her Freshman year than Peyton and the boys did in his... way better.

If this is how good we are this year, just imagine what's comin'..........

Very disappointing losing to an Arizona team that had to play all day yesterday.

Our team is growing quick though. I think it is pretty obvious we should be right back in the position to win it next year.

Just occurred to me- in the interests of heightening the way comparing Renfroe to Peyton will just naturally cause a massive wave of puckering across the Vol Nation: Not only did Ivy do better her 1st year than Manning did in his, but Ivy had to learn, study, and play both Offense and Defense.

I know, I know, comparing Ivy with Peyton is ridiculous- I mean, after all, she's a Defensive star and he played Offense.

Don't they have the next coming of Monica Abbott next year?

They have Ivy Renfroe's younger sister Ellen coming in, who's supposed to be as good as Ivy according to their HS coach. Abbott is a rare talent though; she's one of the 3 best pitchers in the world. It will likely be a long time before UT gets another pitcher of her caliber.

I'd say it's too early to tell about Ivy, either way. While she's pitching so well as a Freshman that it was enough to get TN to the National Semifinals, just like in other sports, High School & college SB are surprisingly different games. While I don't like to admit it, she may end up just remaining one of the best pitchers in women's softball & playing for the Olympic team without ever getting as good as Abbott.

They made some base running errors in both games today. They're a young team, 4 freshman starters, I think. Top ranked recruiting class coming in next year. They should make a run for the next few years in the WCWS. I hope they win a few National Championships. I'm tired of seeing the PAC-10 win it every year.

I don't really know why he'd make that reference but whatever....it was a nice run. We weren't supposed to be there for at least another year...hopefully we can do better next year...GO VOLS!!!

Ralph's coaching was pathetic in the end. He seemed to "disappear" at times, especially when the heat was on!
Poor Brown had NO IDEA what was going on WRT her base running gaff. Where the hell was the "3rd Base Coach" when she was running!???? Piss poor. Unless this team has OVERWHELMING talent advantages, I'm not sure they will EVER make it further. Ralph and Karen have done a great job getting talent to Knoxville, but their tournament coaching reminds me a lot of "Phil ball". It is what it is.

It may sound harsh, but the LV's always fold when the going gets tough in the CWS. Young? Yea, the Arizona pitcher was a freshman and they had to play one or two more games than the LVs. Tennessee's hitting always disappears in the big games. I think Zona is tougher than we are--and those running mistakes yesterday were terrible, stuff you learn not to do at age 10. We can usually find a way to come up short.

I too would like to see the Weekleys stop being so Meekly in these games. The fact is, we were just as good as zona, but got weak in the head and in the knees.

Given how truly young this team is with 15 underclassmen(women, whatever), I don't think this was a bad showing at all. I sat there watching thinking to myself, man we really need a thumper in the middle of the lineup especially after seeing teams like Hawaii and UCLA just continue to mash. According to ESPN Rise, we have the #1 recruiting class in the country coming in next season including the #2 prep player in the US in SS Madison Shipman link to class hereTop Ten Recruiting Classes in 2010 - ESPN RISE. Look forward to seeing the LV back next season.

Excellent post. Anyone who has watched the LV's since 2006 knows this is spot on. Zona thrives under pressure, the LV's choke. That being said, great run with so many young players. If this team is ever going to win the WCWS they must get much tougher mentally .

My wifes college coach is the pitching coach. Marty told us that he had a stud pitcher coming in this year and he was not kidding. She had two balls that missed their spots and she paid for it. The plate ump wasn't really helping her any either. All in all I think they did really well. Armchair you do realize that they have 15 underclassmen right? Your going to have mistakes happen when you have that many underclassmen playing. I do wish that they would get a power hitter. Thats not Ralph's style ball though. Marty loves power hitters.

As an Arizona alum who's son attends UT I was sort of rooting for both teams. I think the Wildcats had a big edge in coaching and toughness. Tennessee has a good team with a bright future and should be proud of their season.
