Help me pick a team to follow

Play fantasy baseball with a little money on the line. That will make you want to follow the sport and help you pick a team to pull for.

I would say the Dodgers but they're in a mess right now so you probably wouldn't be happy with them.

At least you got Donnie Baseball

So I haven't followed MLB in about 15 years. I just haven't been able to get into it like I have with CFB, NFL, NBA, and NHL. I've decided to change that this year, but if I'm really gonna give watching baseball the old college try, I need a team to follow. So who is your favorite team and why?

It pains me, but living in Baton Rouge I'd say Houston as I'm guessing they are the team on TV the most there and it's about 4 hours away. I'm guessing local AM radio or lower end FM radio carries them too.

I, in good conscience, cannot tell anyone to follow the Cubs, Sox, Yankees or Braves.

Agreed in most occasions, but he lives 4 hours from there. So I figured why not.

Go with St. Louis. Will be an interesting off-the-field season anyway.

You're completely right. He should root for the team that's had one playoff appearance in 15 years. :)

You could wait for Naw Orleans to get an expansion team.

Before Hurricane Katrina, I would say they could get a that moves. It makes sense for a lot of reasons.

However, I don't think they can fund the team. Hell, the Hornets could move to Seattle in five years.

Whoever you can get on TV or radio regularly

This is the answer. The only way to follow a team is every day. The game's got to be on TV while you're helping your kid do his homework, on the radio while you're working the grill, in your car when you're making that late night grocery run. It's the background for your whole life six months a year.

I don't think the internet makes that a realistic possibility for any team quite yet. Yes, if I suddenly decided to jump on the Giants' bandwagon, I could install the MLB At-Bat app on my phone (highly recommended) and listen to the radio broadcasts that way, and yes, I could get a MLB.tv subscription and watch all their games on my computer and even then on my TV, but that would require a whole lot of daily annoying finagling with cables and speakers and whatnot. It's supposed to be a lot more seamless and organic than that. That's what you do when you're a fan of a team stuck on the other side of the world, not newly following one.

Pick a team that you get reasonably clear local radio broadcasts of at your home. Buy a 10 dollar AM/FM radio that you tune to that station, and then that's the only thing you ever do with it.

This summer I lived right next to the L.A. Angles stadium. Root for them since the All Star game was held. Be that guy. Be like Mike.
