So your views on the value of patents have changed now that you have an idea you want to sell?

"If I had it my way, patents wouldn't exist."

"Yes I oppose patent laws. In my experience, most people that support patent law have not fairly evaluated the costs and benefits of patents."

"Plenty of money would be made in the absence of patents. Patents are anti-free market."

Well the plastic scene's dead, but he's holding out in the Village. He's been writing posts, speaking out against wealth and privilege. He says, I don't believe in money, but a man could make him a killin' 'Cause some of that stuff don't sound much different than annealing.

I hear down there it's changed, you see
Well, they're not as strict as they used to be

He's gone patent, look at his boots
He's gone patent, back to his roots
He's gone patent, a new kind of suit
He's gone patent, here he comes

You're very confused here.

In a perfect world, patents wouldn't exist, but in a world where they do, it's in my best interest to play by the rules. I'm not going to use these BS rules to screw anybody over. I'm just going to ensure nobody screws me over using the rules.

I don't agree with income tax, but it's in my best interest to pay it, is it not?

You're looking really hard for hypocrisy, but you're not going to find it.

1. Your analogy is poor. You are required to pay income tax but are not required to file patent applications.

2. It actually the definition of hypocrisy. You intend to use the patent system for your benefit even though you argue that the system is detrimental to its purpose of promoting innovation.

3. Are you ok with the person buying your idea/patent suing a competitor that copies the idea? If not, why would anyone pay any significant amount to buy the idea/patent from you if they cannot keep others from making the exact same product as soon as it hits the market?

I got nothing to prove to you. I'm not going to sue anybody. I'm not going to use it to my advantage. I'm just protecting myself. I'd rather not have to do it, but because I live in a world where people can sue anybody at any time for whatever reason, it's a good idea that I protect myself in every way possible, and that includes patenting my product.

There is nothing hypocritical about arguing for a different world, while simultaneously trying to fit into the one in which I live.

I think you have a misunderstanding of patents. Just because you obtain a patent does not mean you can't be sued for violation of an earlier patent. In other words, patents offer you no protection other than preventing competitors from copying your idea, which you are opposed to if I understand you correctly.

Not true. It helps prevent others from coming along and getting a patent and then suing me, claiming they had the idea for it first. It doesn't matter if I'm first to market, if the guy has an e-mail to a friend in 2005 saying "you know what would be a good idea? A game that [something closely related to my product]" and he has the patent, I could be totally f***ed.

Thanks for your concern, though.
