Okay, I'm reading this board, and I'm seeing a lot of names tossed out and a lot of "yes" and "no" responses. I'm even seeing some more emphatic no responses.

Heres' the point I'm at now.

I don't care if we hire a former scumbag, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if we hire a guy with a show cause, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if we hire a completely unproven guy from a small school, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if we hire a former NFL Super Bowl Winning coach, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if our coach wears orange pants, a visor, a sweater vest, or wants to paint our turf orange, or wants black uniforms, as long as he comes in and wins.

So what am I saying? I don't care if we hire Strong, Mullen, Patterson, Petersen, Gruden, Tressel, Sumlin, Smart, even Fulmer.

I JUST WANT TO WIN AGAIN!

HART!! HIRE A WINNER! We may not like the name at first, but if he wins, it won't matter!

Even if we get the death penalty when he is done?

I agree with the want to win...but I don't want to win at any cost.

Sure you do. UT has never won anything. We are desperate for a winner here. Anybody. Please come and save us. Please!!!! I don't know if we can take another loss in a football game. I don't have a link, but I heard the Earth will begin to rotate backwards on its axis in protest.

The university's reputation matters a lot. We shouldn't consider hiring a proven piece of **** for some success. And to be honest, we shouldn't have to.

We have got a hell of a reputation as of now. We are an after thought in college football. Noone outside of the fanbase takes the orange seriously anymore. I think it's hard for the fanbase to even take them seriously. Tennessee has become a joke the last few years. Winning matters and I am all for ANY coach who can win now. Each day Dooley is still coach here, we become less and less relevant in the SEC. The longer Dave Hart keeps quiet, the worse this will be for the next guy in line.

Wow. I hope Hart and the boosters put more effort into finding a good coach than you are indicating. Don't you think all Vol fans want to win again?

Picking the right coach takes plenty of research and some luck. I think every Vol fan wants to hire a winner but just because someone says they are a winner on their resume doesn't make it so. Besides, hiring any scumbag and ending up with NCAA infractions isn't desirable.

I'm glad you aren't in charge of making a critical decision.

When did I say that I want a guy who is going to come in and cheat and deflate balls or lie or commit violations?

I said I want a winner. And I want one regardless of his past. Just because Bobby Petrino was scum in the past does not mean that he will be here. People can change.

Why do you automatically assume that we will wind up with NCAA infractions if we hire someone with a questionable resume? Lane had a fairly clean resume and he messed us over with those.

I'm not saying just throw morals to the wind. But there's a difference in knowing what someone has done in the past, and assuming what someone may do in the future.

I'm saying, hire a winner. Any coach can cheat. Any coach can commit violations. We will never know until those things happen. But don't sit and exclude someone because their prior mistakes.

Thank you.

I'm just saying, there are plenty of people who will win out there. Find one of them, and open up the checkbook and get them.

I'm not going to judge what they've done at other places. I would hope they would think of our job as a second chance and run a clean program and do the best they could to win.

I just want to win. I want to believe in UT football again. I want to walk into Neyland Stadium knowing we're going to play a dominating 60 minutes of football. I want to be predicted to compete for the SEC and National Titles again. I want to see a little number next to our name again!

No unproven small college coach. This job should be more prestigious prize. No more gambles.

It should be, but its' not. I mean, let's not kid ourselves. Now, don't get me wrong. We are in the best conference in the country. We have the best facilities in the country, or at least top 5. We have a fantastic fan base. We have good radio and TV coverage. We have a rich history and tradition. We have a good location in Knoxville. We have plenty of history and tradition.

So you're asking..."Whats missing?"

Here's what is missing.

What's missing is a commitment from the athletics department that is going to make a PUBLIC statement that we are going to be on top every single year. And that means that we need a AD that is not going to settle for mediocrity like 3 losing seasons in a row, or a lack of improvement. We need an AD that is not going to settle for 20,000 empty seats no matter what the game is. We need an AD that is not going to settle for a coach that doesn't have an answer for a fall out or a loss. We need an AD that is going to place accountability on coaches and no one else, in matters of discipline, winning and losing, and academic success. We need a AD that does not put a price limit on success. If wins come at a price tag of $7 million a year, then we'll pay $7.1 million.

THAT is why this is not a trophy job right now. THAT is why we went for a nobody in Lane Kiffin. THAT is why after that, we went deeper into mediocre expectations and got a NOBODY in Derek Dooley, implying that we would rather take a chance at climbing back the hard way, then starting with someone who says "We WILL be at the top, because we're committed to being at the top."

If Cheek, Hart, donors, and everyone else who is responsible for these decisions throw away the inhibitions that have plagued us in hiring Dooleys and Kiffins and pull out the check book and write a check to bring in a hire that says "We WILL be back on top," then yes, we will become a trophy job.

But right now, we're middle of the pack because leadership has allowed us to be.

Have some guts, Cheek and Hart. Make the hire. Save this program. You want to be on top? Act like it.
