Here's the Point I'm At.

I howould say most of us are with you. I will say that we need someone who loves Tennessee(like Fulmer)and wants to be here long term.

I wouldn't even say necessarily that we even need someone who bleeds orange and wants to be here long term.

It's not about how long the guy is here, and it's not about how orange his blood is.

It's about the attitude up top. We need to say "we're going to shell out top dollar for a guy who is going to re-energize our program, recruit talent here, and get us back to national relevance."

Then if that guy leaves, we'll open up the wallet and we'll get a guy in here who will continue it. Not just work with what we have, but will build on it. I don't think at all that if Nick Saban left that Alabama would go looking to a Sun Belt school for a coordinator to become their HC. They're going to look for an accomplished Head Coach. They're going to look for an NFL coordinator. They're going to aim high. And that's why they're successful.

We need to aim higher. It starts up top.

When did I say that I want a guy who is going to come in and cheat and deflate balls or lie or commit violations?

I said I want a winner. And I want one regardless of his past. Just because Bobby Petrino was scum in the past does not mean that he will be here. People can change.

Why do you automatically assume that we will wind up with NCAA infractions if we hire someone with a questionable resume? Lane had a fairly clean resume and he messed us over with those.

I'm not saying just throw morals to the wind. But there's a difference in knowing what someone has done in the past, and assuming what someone may do in the future.

I'm saying, hire a winner. Any coach can cheat. Any coach can commit violations. We will never know until those things happen. But don't sit and exclude someone because their prior mistakes.

I assume you are responding to my comment.

I know every Vol fan is looking to the future and wants our program in SEC and national contention again. If someone isn't, then they aren't a Vol fan.

Moving along, you did say:

I don't care if we hire a former scumbag, as long as he comes in and wins.

When has ever being associated to a scumbag for anything worked out? Would you hire a scumbag to babysit your children? Would you hire a scumbag to manage your 401k? Would you want your daughter dating a scumbag?

Our university has been through a lot in the last 5 or 6 years...demise of the Fulmer era, Lane Kiffin, and the Dooley debacle. The players, coaches themselves, university, and the fans have been through a lot. If I were Hart, I would try to minimize the chance of us getting into any trouble or causing more drama. That starts by not picking known scumbags to begin with. I don't think our program could tolerate any scandals or drama in our recovery.

I'm not trying to be flippant or dismissive. We all want a winner. There's just a level of integrity and trust that I believe we should not sacrifice. We can be winners again without having to risk the heritage of Knoxville and the university. After all, that's what makes us volunteers.

Okay, I'm reading this board, and I'm seeing a lot of names tossed out and a lot of "yes" and "no" responses. I'm even seeing some more emphatic no responses.

Heres' the point I'm at now.

I don't care if we hire a former scumbag, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if we hire a guy with a show cause, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if we hire a completely unproven guy from a small school, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if we hire a former NFL Super Bowl Winning coach, as long as he comes in and wins.

I don't care if our coach wears orange pants, a visor, a sweater vest, or wants to paint our turf orange, or wants black uniforms, as long as he comes in and wins.

So what am I saying? I don't care if we hire Strong, Mullen, Patterson, Petersen, Gruden, Tressel, Sumlin, Smart, even Fulmer.

I JUST WANT TO WIN AGAIN!

HART!! HIRE A WINNER! We may not like the name at first, but if he wins, it won't matter!

It's risk-reward. ANY coach you hire is a risk, regardless of what their past is. We could hire Lovie Smith and he end up committing a violation. We could get in trouble with the NCAA and not even mean to do it with their rules that are many times ridiculous.

Yes, I realize that you may run the risk of hiring a coach with a past history of getting in trouble, and I agree it is a wise decision to stay away from that if you have a better option.

However, what I'm saying is if you have a shot at a known winner who will revitalize our program, you cannot not hire him simply because of his past.

We want to win. Everyone talks about our reputation. Right now, our reputation is not measured in running a clean program. Our reputation is about the fact that we have faded out of relevance and are no longer the Tennessee of old.

I by no means want NCAA sanctions. But I will also admit that one of the reasons that I hated so much when Lane left was because he brought excitement back to our program. And I know our sanctions have stunk, and all of that was a pile of poo. But the excitement and hope we all had when he was here, and the direction of Tennessee football, was almost worth the price to pay.

I am just saying if I am Dave Hart, I would rather take the risk of hiring the best option to who can get us back to relevance the fastest, as opposed to passing on a good option simply so that we can protect our reputation. We may hire someone that will bite us in our rear ends. But that's the chance you take with any coach that is truly wanting to win.

TNHopeful505,

I get what you are saying. In fact, all of your follow-up posts have been spot-on. Therefore, I have to ask....who are your top 5 hopefuls?

Yes. Obviously, I would not ever say that we should at first choice throw caution to the wind and hire someone questionable. But, I wouldn't at this point in program history say that we should pass over someone who could help our program just because of mistakes made in the past. In my opinion, if the NCAA deems a mistake that terrible, that person should not be allowed to coach again period. Just my opinion.

My top 5?

I think just about everyone's #1 is Gruden. I mean, you just couldn't ask for a better booster shot than him. Tennessee ties, loves UT, smart coach in terms of X's and O's, Super Bowl winner, NFL ties, would most likely bring an NFL experienced staff, plus, there's not a high school student in the country who doesn't know his face. Would be excellent for recruiting, and he would bring the no-nonsense approach we've been missing. He is my number one, and I'm severely holding onto hope that the people saying he's coming is right.

#2 would probably be Patterson. I put him here because I don't think Petersen is a real possibility, otherwise he would be my number two. I just think to be in the state of Texas, competing with Texas, A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor for recruits, and yet, still fielding a competitive team that had they have been in a better conference would have probably gone for a National Championship says something about you as a coach. We need someone who can do more with less. Recruiting is always going to come more difficult for Tennessee than it will for a state like Alabama, Georgia, or Florida. We can get elite recruits, but we will always have to have those few diamonds that we need to coach up. I want someone who can spot talent and coach them up and gameplan against the big boys, and I think Patterson does a great job of that.

#3/#4/#5, it's hard to say for me.

I like Charlie Strong. Say what you want, but he has Louisville at 9-1. Louisville. We need someone who knows how to play SEC defense, and he could be that guy. He seems very personable, and would recruit well. People like him a lot. I would not be opposed to him, but I don't see him coming. Louisville has already said they're prepared to make him the highest paid coach in the NCAA if they have to. I think they're bluffing. But he himself has said that he's not the type to leave in the middle of a rebuilding project, and I personally believe him. I don't think we get him, but I do think he is a solid hire.

I know many call him Fulmer 2.0, but Tommy Tuberville just won't get out of my head. I know he got fired at Auburn, just like we fired Fulmer. But the difference is, he's still coaching. And he's still winning games. And he's beating quality opponents. And he's slappin the fire out of assistants that aren't doing their job! I like that for some reason.

I would also be okay with Gus Malzahn. The guy can run an offense. And I think this year's Auburn collapse will only make people see how he and Cam Newton were that Auburn team's success. He would recruit well. But he won't leave after only one year. People just don't do that (except Lane).

It's easier for me to say who I wouldn't have at the top of my list. I wouldn't have Kirby Smart. I just don't think you should be able to waltz right into a SEC head coaching job without being a head coach.

But that's really about it. Gundy (not coming, but would be nice), Cutcliffe (would be okay depending on the staff he brought), Jimbo Fisher would be a fantastic hire (but won't happen, he has it made at FSU). Bob Stoops might leave OU, but not sure how well he would do in the SEC. Kingsbury needs HC experience first. Jay Gruden would be a fantastic hire as well, if it wound up that way. Greg Roman I don't know that much about. Petrino would win here, he's won every where he's been. Tressel would come with some penalties, but would probably do well in recruiting, though I don't think he would be a good fit here.

Like I said....I really don't care...as long as they win.

Wow. Your list (through TT) is strikingly similar to one I said to my friend tonight. I was basing it on what was most realistic (with some wishes in there). People say Saban and Chip Kelly, etc and IMHO, those guys are never coming.

If I were Hart, we have to take one shot at our dream coach (Gruden). You have to say you tried. After that, look at people that you can actually get that has a proven track record. I say that Gary Patterson and Tommy Tuberville qualify for that. I'm not one that knocks Charlie Strong, but I would feel more confident in making that $20M gamble if he had two more years under his belt...but Hart doesn't have that luxury. I definitely am skeptical of a DC or OC making their big debut at TN.

Considering the dumping of CDD and the hiring of a new coach and stuff will be about $20M, we need to get this right. Getting right can be tough and not necessarily realized for several years. I don't envy Hart.

Thanks for the reply.

Obviously Saban and Kelly are the two best coaches in the game (IMO), and they would be at the top of anyone's list if we're in a fantasy world, but you're right, they're not leaving. They've got it made. In fact, Chip might actually get his NC this year.

There's several coaches that I'd love to include on a list, but they just realistically can't be bought, due to the fact that their schools would probably shoot them if they left. I honestly believe that Saban retires at Bama. I don't think he goes back to the NFL. I really think he's had enough of that.

And yes, I agree, Strong is a gamble. But he is a whole lot less of a Gamble than Smart is. But like I said, Strong isn't leaving Louisville.

I also could lump in Sumlin with the list of great hires. But he's not going to cross conference after one year. He's the most popular guy in Texas right now. But man, did we let that one get away.

I'm hoping that if Gruden doesn't happen that Patterson is our man. Unless, by some miracle, that Peterson would say yes, which he won't.

But....from looking at the Cliff Notes....I'm sorry, but it's hard to not think that Gruden is coming. And if you have a pulse and care a thing about Tennessee, it's impossible to not be excited about that.

If Gruden finishes out his season with MNF, he will be announced around the 23rd of December....Merry Christmas to us!

Also, I would be perfectly okay with Butch Davis. I do not believe he was responsible for North Carolina's problems, and shouldn't have been fired. He would be a good choice.

Forgot to mention him.

Granted.

1) UT ties
2) East Tennessee ties
3) Seems to be squeaky clean
4) Superbowl Champ
5) Good NFL record
6) Seems to appreciate the University
7) Would be an instant recruiting magnet
8) His hiring would be the top news in college football this year

9) Would bring instant credibility back to the Tennessee football program. THAT is what would say "you aren't going to have Tennessee to kick around anymore"
