Heupel says it's time for Mike Matthews

I heard folks on the radio say this as well. Tell Nico to get the ball out fast and give our boys a chance to beat somebody and make a play. a 6 yard completion with potential for YAC is better than a 20 yard drop / miss. Eventually they will start sneaking up giving Nico a faster window for a deep ball.

Not every deep pass has to be a 40 or 50 yard bomb. I remember back in '22 we were chunking on 5-10 yard passes constantly which started the trend of safeties sneaking up to get burnt by Hyatt. We do not have a JH on this team, but we can give our boys a shot if we can hit more in mid range.
Tim Tebo and Tim Couch made a living on dink and dunk passes when they were in college

I hope that’s not just coach speak. Heupel has definitely been reluctant to let the young guys play. But seems to be coming off that some this year as we’ve seen guys like boo Carter get extensive playing time. But we need that athleticism. There were deep shots thrown right at the finger tips of squirrel and nimrod against Florida. A guy slightly faster than nimrod or with a slightly better catch radius that squirrel could’ve been made.

All he said was to "anticipate him playing." So I'll believe he'll actually get more than a handful of snaps when I see it.

This is true. He has played the last two games. He will be part of the action if he does the right things. Sounds like he has shown a little more at practice so time to do so in a game

We really don't use the WRs a lot even when they're healthy. Our top receiver doesn't crack the top 25 in the conference in yardage

MM will get more playing time but not confident he'll play more than those who have been in the program for at least a year.

Squirrel (the playmaker) didn't get much play as a True Freshman, did he?

Squirrel and Boo are really the only freshman that have really started. Could be more that I’m missing.

WR in this system isn't completely like a lot of places. In a normal system, WRs can get by just knowing the playbook and running decent routes. In this offense, it's extremely important to be able to read coverages and understand leverage on top of all the other stuff. I believe that's why they prefer upperclassmen and most of our WRs really have it click after about a year in the system

Honestly, I'd roll with a healthy trio of Brazzell, Matthews and Nimrod against Bama. Let the other guys get healthy. Just can't expect to beat a team like bama with 3 injured WR's out on the field.

I think Thornton is going to play. Id love to see Matthews in the slot and put him in motion to get him in some 1 on 1s with a safety.

If he is close to on par with the other guys it just makes sense to give him a shot. From all accounts early in the spring he was making plays, our passing game has been struggling. Add to that the fact that freshman WR across the country are making an impact and you have to assume future recruits who want to play would notice if everyone else is tearing it up and our guy doesn't even get a chance on the field.
