High risk, low reward

I think this opening game with Utah State will show if there is going to be much to cheer about this year, it's very important for the Vols to win and gain confidence. It's not a season making game, but it's importance can't be over looked.

Win or lose, I will always respect the fact that UT always sets up tough out of conference games. I mean Utah St. is a tough team and then you have Oklahoma this year as well.

You want to be in a position where the Utah St. game is a comfortable win against a solid team and you can walk into Norman knowing your not at a disadvantage with talent, depth and experience. We re not in that position right now.

Most 1st games are low risk no reward, but you can't count on schools like Utah being on top when the schedule is made.

True at all points. But for the record, I doubt even Ham bone schedules USU thinking we are only a 6pt fav. Prob looked like a Patsy at scheduling time. Like the last 4 USU payoff games when those schools scheduled them.

The problem with opening with a team like USU is that if you win, you were supposed to. It adds nothing to your resume, really. And in 6 weeks no one cares if you won that game.

But lose it, and the doomsdayers will come out of the woodwork.

I say that with a nod to the fact that UF has the same kind of opponent, although fact is that Idaho is so bad that its more like high risk, no reward.

Then again, we both need Ws against teams like these just to try to eek our way into bowl games. Yuck.

I see where you are coming from. I told my brother in law today(dawg/ convict fan) that USU was no pushover. He was almost run over by that comment. He told me that Tennessee should never say that about a MWC team. If Florida or Tennessee loses to either of these teams, then we are in trouble as far as our mighty SEC legacies are concerned. With that being said(although I'm cringing my teeth), Go Big Orange and Go Garors this weekend!!! I will also be pulling for Clemson because my favorite trout stream is near their school and I absolutely love to see Georgia lose, especially after last season.

Opening against a team like this is a perfect measuring stick for your team. You don't necessarily want to start with an Oklahoma or a UT Martin, as a blowout loss could be detrimental to momentum as could a blowout win tell you literally nothing about your team.

Arkansas State embodies the high risk-low reward statement more so than USU. According to everyone outside of Knoxville and Las Vegas, Tennessee is supposed to lose this Sunday's game.

Yes, USU upsetting Tennessee seems to be the trendy pick among all of the so called "analysts." I can't wait to see their reaction when we beat them by three or four touchdowns.:)

I would have said it's still better for you because there's absolutely no way Florida loses to Idaho.

But then I remembered Ga Southern :eek:lol:

Actually GSU is moving to the Sun Belt conference this year and has done major stadium expansion. They are HEAVILY advertising their upcoming season on local radio (the only reason I know this).

Your avatar and your post entices me to agree with you. But just like the devil finds ways to bring people to the dark, you are a Gator and I must disagree.

Go Vols. F the gators.

Idaho has absolutely no prayer. They are awful awful awful. Georgia Southern last year would drag them up and down the field, so that comparison is silly anyway.

I'm really worried about Sunday. However, I am always worried, so that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
