Iowa high school wrestler defaults rather than face girl - ESPN

DES MOINES, Iowa -- An Iowa high school wrestler who was among the favorites to win his weight class has defaulted on his first-round state tournament match rather than face a girl.

Joel Northup, a home-schooled sophomore who was 35-4 wrestling for Linn-Mar High this season, said in a statement Thursday that he doesn't feel it would be right for him to wrestle Cedar Falls freshman Cassy Herkelman.

Herkelman and fellow 112-pounder Ottumwa sophomore Megan Black made history this year by being the first girls to qualify for the tournament. Black was pinned quickly in her opening match.

Northup said in a statement that he has "tremendous" respect for the girls' accomplishments, but doesn't feel it's appropriate for boys to engage girls in a combat sport.

Let's have boys try out for the softball teams.

Lol.

Or at least the volleyball team. Someone commented on that and I thought the same thing.

Girls are allowed to try out for football and wrestling because there are no women's teams. Guys aren't allowed to try out for volleyball though. Kind of a double standard.

I was joking, but it's kinda ridiculous that girls can force their way into guy's sports but there is no way in he'll a guy could play on a girl's team.

Agreed.

Would be hilarious if all of the top male athletes at the same school came together and joined the volleyball team. A team of 6ft+ guys with ups spiking the ball. Classic.

I must admit to not being up on current rules in regards to the how of being home-schooled affords one to be and participate in\on a high school sports team?

That would actually be hilarious to watch them tear through a tournament.

I never have understood the counter argument guys should get to play womens sports. If a girl can cut it with the guys, more power to her.

Was reading the comment section on ESPN...

He didnt want to show his male erection in those man tights they wear.

Something tells me girls quailifying for states in wrestling arent giving anyone erections, not even 15 year old boys.

Hahahaha.

I would put an end to it.

I would wrestle this chick and put her in a hold that is eerily similar to the 69.

I would keep her there until the match ended.

I wonder what her motivation is, given that she was "quickly pinned" in her first match of the tournament.

This is a good approach. I've always been for honoring one's wishes. One shouldn't forfeit or hold back.

I think as long as you are home schooled in a school's district, then you are eligible to participate in sports at said school.

That's fine.

I just don't like how it's a rule/law that girls can try out for men's teams if there isn't a women's team but a guy can't do the same. What if a guy really wants to play volleyball? He is s.o.l.

So much for equality.

The other girl was pinned quickly. It didn't say what happened to the girl he was suppose to wrestle. Guessing the second match hasn't taken place yet. I'm sure the result will be much of the same.

If she does end up winning a match, it will look a little embarrassing that the kid chose not to wrestler her. I imagine her opponent will be way better than anyone she beat throughout the year though.

Isn't Iowa one of the bigger wrestling states? I figured they would have their own girl's division.

Especially if you have seen girls from Iowa

I don't know man... Every other girl I pass around the U of I campus is pretty hot.

I'm sure the state isn't great as a whole but the college girls are smokin.

I would agree with that. It should go both ways
