Hire fits Hamilton Mold To A 'T'

Cuonzo Martin is exactly who we should have expected. He's everything Mike Hamilton likes in a hire. Raleigh... Dooley... Martin.

Young, tremendous upside, from a quality coaching tree, but not truly proven. The Hamilton blueprint in flesh and blood.

Everything I've been able to learn in this short time about Martin tells me he is as high character as you'll find anywhere. The man may be a great coach for Tennessee.

This much I now know. Don't ever look for a Hamilton led athletic department to make an audacious hire. It just ain't happening.

Like the Dooley hire, it is probably about the best we could get given the very tough circumstances and uncertainty facing the program.

I get the sense that we only serve to limit ourselves with this approach. The potential pool of quality applicants immediately declines whenever Hamilton picks up a phone.

Everything I've read or heard about Martin is positive or downright effusive in their opinion. I like the hire. But that doesn't mean I like the approach to hiring this Athletic Department consistently employs.

We have a Rolls Royce product. But we sell it as if it were a Falcon on concrete blocks.

Easy on the Falcon reference. I happen to have a '63 convertible nicely restored.

We aspire to eclipse UAT in football and Kentucky in basketball. Their last hires in each respective sport were what you would expect from a front running organization. Our last two hires in each program are completely deflating from a fan perspective. Both may be fine hires in the long run, but we are crossing fingers for a long run.

Are thousands of fans going to the airport to welcome Martin to Knoxville today? Doubtful.

yep .. if we threw $4 million, or whatever the going rate is + $1, at the top 10 'available' coaches and they all said no, then I think most ppl will be all right w/ this hire ..

if not, then it says we're not willing to pay what it takes to be a top tier program

Just like most basketball fans at this point apparently.
If I had to guess, they were probably too busy looking over box scores to see how many Martin coached players have registered a triple double in a game to decide whether or not he can coach.

Wait a minute. You're the guy who said Fulmer would have no problem competing with Saban and Cal would struggle with the oh so tough SEC.

Hamilton being a money guy, seems like he is looking for the young up and coming coach that he doesn't have to pay as much.

I don't think so. I think they gauged the interest of big names. When that didn't work, we decided to go the mid-major route, and Martin compares favorably with almost all of them except Brad Stevens.

ridiculous but expected

Please explain your point, if you have one.

Here's my point. As a Mod, you have seen no limit to the threads espousing knowledge of the coaching search. For our new coach to arrive unknown last night in the cloak of darkness is almost unimaginable.

No, there have been no threads that I have seen where anyone has acted as if they knew exactly what was going on with the coaching search. I, like several others, posted what was being said by Brent Hubbs and other members of the Knoxville media. So, get over it, and stop your constant whining.

Absolutely. And in hind sight it doesn't take a mensa member to see those guys have been worth every penny paid.

and how many people even knew Martin was going to hired. Don't lump me into the group believing every poster who claims a source. As you said, I read more posts than most and know most of it is BS

he traveled back to speak with his team last night. He then flew back to Knoxville on a private plane. No one could have known how long he was going to take or whether he would return last night at all. Acting like the number of fans at the airport at 11pm waiting for an unknown flight means anything is ridiculous.
