Holly's pre-game speech

I believe it was either deerpark or skeeter both whom are very connected to the athletic department have said on multiple occasions that women's players were very much for the change. The only complaints I've really seen are from the conspiracy theorist who think Dave Hart is out to shut down women's athletics.

Do you know who Laura Lauter and Shelly Sexton are?

Of course they are on board if the want to keep their job. Go talk to some players and former players. DeerPark is just repeating what he was told. Go talk to the people that this effects and then get back to me.

your post offended me...... Lady Vols forever!

Why would someone want to come in and change tradition that has been a part of Tennessee University forever and a day? Why change it at this point? I do not see other colleges and universities taking that route. To me this is making a change for the sake of change. What exactly is the point?

Hart started this 3 years ago but he didn't have enough pull to ram it through until Pat was mostly out of the way. Who knows why. Someone comes in from outside and doesn't grasp the tradition or the meaning of what it means to be a Lady Vol.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Two of Tennessee's most accomplished softball players walked across the stage on Saturday at the University of Tennessee, both taking their degrees before walking into careers in the sport that they love.

Melissa Davin and Madison Shipman ...

Both players wore the graduation robe with the "Student Athlete" sash bearing the same Lady Volunteer logo that adorned their playing uniforms. Shipman saw the connection as quite appropriate.

"It's a huge honor, I've been looking forward to this day for the last four and a half years and I'm glad it's finally here," she said. "A lot of hard work, a lot of early morning workouts and a lot of late night studying, but I finally made it."

Until he says different then I'll continue to believe him, you want equality but yet still want to be different. Cant have your cake and eat it to, I'm over this conversation as I feel all sports programs associated with the University of Tennessee should simply be labeled VOLS. So on this we will just have to agree to disagree, have a merry christmas guys!:hi:

Wow! So much for diversity. Everybody jump in the same mold, quick! That statement....just so wrong in many ways. The best thing he has put on this board is, "I'm over this conversation."

Again we will just have to agree to disagree, continue on with your conspiracy theories

What conspiracy theories? The facts are Hart wants it changed for some reason and he took steps to do so. It's not a theory. You would be better off talking to some people than believing a nameless/faceless forum jockey.

I thought he was "over this conversation". Apparently has difficulties with sticking to his statement as well as his reading comprehension.

Oh well....

I get that "Lady Vols" has been associated with the women's basketball team for a long time--but it's an antiquated name. The word "lady" doesn't match well with an athletic team--not in 2014/2015. Maybe it did in 1970, when there were almost no women's sports programs and there was a generally condescending few of female athletics. But that's not the case anymore.

Did a little searching and came up with this...seems we are not the only teams in Division 1 who wear the Lady in their nicknames. List of NCAA Division I institutions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I counted 51 forms of acknowledgement to the female gender in this list.

Kudos to you,Piney Bluff Vol,on your research. We can chalk this change up to the ever escalating political correctness that permeates so much of today's supposed intellect. An earlier poster related that "Lady" is an earned title and so it is. Another poster said something about some wanting "equal but separate" identities. But don't we all want separate identities? Now I guess we can all be glad that our AD came from only schools(Alabama and Florida State) that have no separate female identity in sports teams, and not from one where Vols is pronounced with a long o as in voles. Some change is not warranted.
