Hooker's future at Detroit...

YIKES !!! Jared Goff getting $53 mill a year for the next four years...yes, the guy has been in the top 5 in every positive QB category in the league the last two years, but is this over paying?

What does this mean for Hooker?
Does Hendon become a career backup automatically?
Barring a catastrophe to Goff (injury, back slide, etc.), does Hooker ever see the field, let alone start a game?
Should Hooker think about moving on after the rookie contract expires?
Thoughts VolNation?

Will Hendon join the Lions club? Will he sell pecan logs at the red light?

He's not a FA. He can't just go to another team and the Lions aren't going to trade him

And for those not familiar: the Lions for the last decade+ have been AWFUL with staffing their QB room. Despite having not taken an actual NFL snap, Hendon is still probably better than any of their backups in recent years (except Teddy Bridgewater).

They had to pay Goff or let him go. And there are plenty of teams that would have given him this type of contract. The lions are making a commitment to their core group of offensive players right now. St. Brown, Sewell and now Goff. I don’t know what it means for HH in the long term, but he’s going to be able to get a good feel for their system and will likely have to fill in at some point.

No it’s not overpaying. It’s the going rate for a top ten QB, which Goff is. The Lions window is the next 3-4 years, so they didn’t have much choice but to give him this type of deal.

Why are you certain they won't trade him? Clearly they feel differently about Goff now vs when they drafted Hooker.
They drafted him in the THIRD ROUND. If there was an urgency to replace Goff, I doubt they would’ve waited. You draft promising talent with no promises. Make your roster more talented is always the goal. Trading him (if they like what he’s bringing) makes the roster less talented and cuts depth. If someone offers a first rounder, then they have to swing…but that’s unlikely.

Hooker isn't going anywhere for three years. The Lions have him for three more years @ $1,429,755. That is a steal for a quality backup. Believe me, he will be developed well in that system. He will have no pressure due to the way the Lions have this structured. Not many really good / great quarterbacks get this opportunity coming out of college. By the time Goff's contract ends he will be 34. So what do the Lions end up doing? They have three seasons to determine which QB they want to keep for the long term. The odd man out gets traded and starts for another club. I really can't imagine a better scenario for HH right now.

That's not how trades work. They would get something in return.
Educate me Obi-Wan. I get that! I qualified why you don’t trade him for WHATEVER. IF they like his development, it’ll need to be considerable to give up a backup QB on his rookie deal with a third round slot.

The QB market can't continue resetting itself every time a marginally top 10 guy gets a new contract.

Dog water QBs filling up the top 10 picks in the draft really says where things are at. Spending those picks on a QB used to be risky. Now, the risk is peanuts because they are so cheap. Yeah, you lose out on a high pick when they become busts. But that's nothing compared to overpaying a guy like Goff who needs a top tier supporting cast to compete for a Superbowl. But can't get one because he will never have you picking in the top 10 and you can't do anything in free agency because of his giant contract. The Lions will spend that contract finishing seasons on the playoff bubble and never sniffing a Superbowl. Maybe that's better than being terrible every year and trying to win the "Get a franchise QB on a rookie contract" sweepstakes. Who knows.

Personally, the league needs to come around to the fact that the Chiefs are an exception and there is a grand canyon between Mahomes and the guys rounding out the above average QBs in the league. The contracts should reflect that.

This part always gets real hand-wavey when NFL fans start talking about trades lol. What would they get? A third round pick? Is that worth losing your backup QB?
So look at the Kirk Cousins situation. He was drafted in the fourth round, RG3 drafted #2 overall by the same team. Starting QB didn't work out in the long run. Cousins earns starting role. He was franchised twice before leaving in free agency, The "trade value" for a franchise tagged player would be AT LEAST a first round pick. So it behooves the Lions to develop and showcase (preseason) HH going forward, even if they do not see him as their short term franchise QB.

Obviously they have no real reason to trade him for nothing. That wouldn't make sense.

Kirk Cousins got the tag because he was established as a bonafide top 10 QB already. And you're right, at that point, he would have demanded a first round pick.

Playing some pre-season games and some glowing reviews from the GM who wants to move him isn't going to drive Hendon's trade value up. Teams have been trying that forever. The Titans tried it last year with butter fingers Malik. The only time I can think of that actually working was when the Patriots dealt Jimmy G.

Unfortunately, the only way to guarantee you get an early shot at the starting job is to be a top 10 pick. And even that isn't a guarantee if your name is Michael Penix. Going in the 3rd round to a good team... It be like that. He'll get a chance eventually just like Dobbs did. Meanwhile there are worse jobs than 7 figure clipboard holder.

Honestly, unless you are Peyton Manning awesome...

the best job in pro ball is to hold that clipboard for 16-18 years.
Hold it? Sh***********t fire, ol Hendon can toss that there clipboard a country mile. That oughta be worth sumpin?

He will be a Titan within the next couple of seasons. 😎
I hope not. The Titans have sucked for ever and a day. He just needs to learn, make a team and cash the checks. Goff will get hurt and he will have plenty of chances to prove himself soon enough. The main thing is to take advantage of his chances when his name is called. It’s the NFL, quarterbacks get hurt every week.

The titans are 54-45 in the past 6 years…hardly sucked for “forever”

Maybe brush up on your NFL. Prior to the previous 2 seasons they were in the playoffs 4 out of 5 years, including making an AFC Championship, ending Tom Brady’s Patriots career on a pick 6, and being the 1 seed in 2021. They have been in more championship games and won twice as many playoff games than the Cowboys over the past 25 years but everyone slobbers over “dem boyz” nonstop.

I know the NFL. I just can’t stand the Titans. Don’t care for them at all.
