More like keep a hot-water bottle nearby. A major misconception (apparently among many who post on here) is that alcohol warms you up. Actually, it makes you more prone to being cold. The alcohol gets in your blood stream and has a "thinning" impact upon the blood stream.

Anyway, go Vols and beat Vandy.

Beer on a cold day will freeze me to death. And while I understand the concept of what you're saying, 100 proof vodka warms me up on a cold day. There's no debating that.

If the drunk that sits behind us gets belligerent again this game...well I got a little something for him this week.

Uh, no, everybody doesn't "know that".

Cause it isn't correct. Yes, alcohol doesn't warm you up, that is correct. But it does not "thin" the blood, if anything it makes it more concentrated as EtOH inhibits anti diuretic hormone, otherwise known as vasopressin, causes you to urinate less concentrated solute and dehydrate you. EtOH effects on the central nervous system, specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (your internal thermostat) may be what has the effect

I had not thought this would turn into a dissertation on alcohol consumption in cold weather. Anyway, here is a link if anyone wants an objective look at the subject. As you can see, the answer has more to do with dillation of blood vessels, among other factors, including what you say.

You will also note I used the word "thinning" in quotes to describe the effect on one's system.

1. Link doesn't work and from the UK

2. It still doesn't thin anything

3. I am not a doctor or anything, oh wait, I am, have had years of physiology, and a urologist so kidneys and the hormones that work on them are kind of in my wheelhouse

4. It's not a big deal, I saw the quotes on thinning and it just threw me for a loop, vascular dilation is completely different and a direct effect of alcohol's work on the nervous system and again, it's inhibition of ADH/vasopressin as vasopressin constricts vessels (therefore dilate without it)

5. It's cool, don't really care anymore, no jab intended. Go Vols, everyone enjoy the game, and have a great time!

Edit: link now working

Still, have fun regardless man and Go Vols!

Try again. I selected the wrong link and edited in the correct one.:hi:

BTW, your post was very helpful and informative, at least to me.

Got it! I get your point was "don't drink alcohol to warm up bc it doesn't actually do that" and it's still very valid

And, who knows, it may actually keep someone from drinking themselves into a stupor to try to stay warm for the game and passing out and freezing to death instead :)

Now let's go beat the Dores!

Go Vols and have a great game day man!

Someone stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

Hope not. They are enough drunks on the road.

If everybody is drunk doesn't that level the playing field?

Ha Ha! That would be a surpise if that ever happened at football game, but I guess stranger things have happened.

Don't think the whiskey warms you up as much as it does make you disregard completely the fact that it is cold haha, atleast from my experiences.

This!

Plus your body has to kick it in high gear to stay warm, which ups your metabolism to process the booze easier which allows you to drink more!
