Hopes for 2013 season

I'm not getting my hope's up this year. Sorry guys
Why should we? Because we have a highly organized coach with a staff of highly motivated coaches?

We have the same talent pool as last year - minus several NFL draftees in the most key positions. :whistling:

Patience. By 2015 we will know if we are true SEC contenders..or not.

Mediocre based on what? Unproven and untested for sure. The fact is that we don't have a clue what we have at QB.

Ok, unproven and untested with marginal performance gainst our mediocre defense in spring ball this far. That is exactly what we know about our QBs at this point.

I hope they exceed my expectations but personally I'm setting the bar very low for 2013. I think CBJ has us pointed in the right directions though.

I hope we get to a bowl game...

We will despite naysayers and doubters. How much better we will be, hard to say right now. But we're going to run some teams out of them stadium whether it's Neyland or their home turf.
=======================================

A 400mph wind blew before me. Many miles distant, trees, grass, and pedestrians bowed in mandated reverence to that wind. It carried my whisper to every ear outside or near a window, “I’m coming.” The evil that has lingered so long in our realm would soon be removed. “I’m coming oh long suffering ones, I’m coming.” The air resonated from my passage through it, the ground trembled in anticipation of my landing. “I’m coming.” Then, I was there turning my wrath upon the evil that had too long afflicted this land. I made (insert name of a rival team) scream.

I don't think the OP or others are being negative, just stating the facts. Most publications and analysts will have us around the 5-7 to possibly 7-5 record. 70% of last yr's offense will be in the NFL, our WRs are very green, and our qb, well he is unproven. Our RBs are average at best, one of them may or may or may not play this season, depending on why Lane was suspended.
However, our O and D line will be improved so the coaches will keep things simple allowing the players to play at full speed, unlike last yr.
With that said, many of the Vol faithful realize this year will be a struggle as we have a ridiculous schedule. Imo, 6-6 is where we will end up which will give us a Bowl game to build on.
This upcoming recruiting class is essential to the program. If we land a top ten class I think we will compete for the East in 2016 , maybe 15, w/strong QB play.

So the op titles a thread "hopes for 2013 season" then states immediately after that he has no hopes for the season lol. Seems negative to me tifwiw

So we fire a.coach that can win 5 and 6 games to hire a coach that the fan base accepts 6 wins and pay him 3m a year.. wtf if this staff isn't good enough to get 7 wins this year why did we hire him... we don't have 3 years to rebuild we have to make bowl games and start winning 9 and 10 games in year 2 and 3...

Otherwise the vols fan base has accepted being irrelevant for the sake of having a coach that gets it...

this is a post that I made in a similar "predictions" thread:

Unfortunately, I'm with the others in the thread that think we're still a while off.

2013:

Season - If we can make a bowl this year, that's improvement enough for me. A win would be nice as well to make it over .500.

Recruiting - I'd like to see Butch actually fill some holes on both sides of the ball with his first "all Butch" class.

2014:

Season - In his second year I'd like for us to get above .500 again, either with another bowl win, or 7-5 going into the bowl game.

Recruiting - I think that Butch would have to prove with the next class that we're serious and making moves in the SEC. I don't even care about national recruiting rankings anymore because we could finish top 20 and still land in the bottom half of the SEC. If we finish #7 or higher in SEC recruiting rankings, I think that's making a statement that we're back on our way up.

2015:

Season - Butch should be able to compete in some games hopefully by year 3. 7-8 wins with a signature bowl win would go a long way.

Recruiting - Again, another recruiting finish in the top 7 of the SEC would provide some consistency on the roster.

2016:

Season - By year 4 we should be back in the 8 wins range. We haven't seen what Butch can do with the team yet on the field, so I have no gauge to which I can associate his success. 8 wins in the regular season is good, 9 wins is great, add a bowl win or major upset and Butch is riding high.

I honestly think that the scenario that I just typed out is really high up there on the "Best Scenario Possible" scale. To think that we'll be BCS competitive within the next 3-4 years is stretching the possibilities of Butch and the team. Maybe it's time for fans to clip the wings on their expectations.

The next 2-3 years aren't going to be awesome, we'll have to find little things here and there to hang our hat on as the team improves.

Unfortunately, at this point, the more elite teams/coaches in the conference have more to do with how soon we'll come back. If Bama, LSU, UGA, SCar, Florida all start to fall off I think we can get a foothold in some of our recruiting areas that we've let slip away. If Clemson, VaTech, Ole Miss, and Auburn trend downwards it would only stand to help us as well.

It's frustrating but we've shot ourselves in the foot and dug a giant hole to climb out of.

If this happens 2017- New Coach

I hope we field a competitive team, one that shows heart and doesn't quit. The w/l record will take care of itself. GBO!

If this happens 2017- New Coach

Unless Butch has less than 24 total wins by 2017 not sure that we could afford to fire anyone.

In a perfect world we have the finances to ditch whoever we want and hire a winner, but we don't have that luxury.

My advice would be to love Butch and get used to him because he's gonna be around for a while as long as he's above the .500 mark.

Just curious, how many wins does Butch need total by 2017? In a SEC East with:
Florida - always loaded and competitive.
UGA - always loaded and competitive under a proven coach.
SCar - hyper-competitive since SEC coaching legend Spurrier righted the ship.
[Note- all of those schools have YEARS of recruiting on us, arguably better/more experienced coaches]
Vanderbilt - not the same Vandy we grew up mocking. Franklin is trolling everything in orange.
Mizzou/UK - the only programs in the East I'd put below us, and we've gone 1-2 against them the last two years.

Bama - Saban, the whole package.
LSU - Miles. They're what we were in the late 90s-early 00s, but with more to show for it.
A&M - immediate competitors, wielding a Heisman winning QB.
Arky - made a good hire, in a similar position as us.
Ole Miss - emerging, finished with a class that we're hoping to replicate.
Miss State - Mullen has them more competitive than years past.
Auburn - trying to rebuild but have shown that they'll do what it takes to win. At a crossroads as a program.

Not to mention that Clemson, VT, UNC, SCar, UVA, GaTech, Ole Miss, Vandy, Ohio State (under Meyer), Miss St are all recruiting threats in states/regions that we had top pecking order in during the height of our reign in the modern era. Not to mention LSU, Bama, UF getting all the top looks before us.

Agree here, although there is time for improvement
before the season starts. I'm with you on the low expectations. I do think 6 wins and a bowl is atainable. Anything beyond that would be a plus this year.

Disagree. If a change needs to be made, the cost will be paid. Have you not been paying attention? Hell we dished out a cool six mil in buyout $ to fire Dooley/hire Jones.

UT's buyout money doesn't count each fiscal year » govolsxtra.com Mobile

Quinn from September. I feel like they will find the money somehow if they need it.

I've been paying very close attention.

UT is in the hole $200 Million dollars.

At Tennessee, Big Orange battles red ink - SportsBusiness Daily | SportsBusiness Journal | SportsBusiness Daily Global

Now, after staggering to losing football seasons in four of the last five years and seeing attendance drop to levels last seen in the 1970s, the Vols find themselves mired in more than $200 million of debt, the most in the SEC, with reserves of just $1.95 million, the least in the conference.
