Hosting a Playoff Game Without Students.

Obviously games on Dec 20/21 would be during the Christmas break for UT students.
You have to wonder how many would stay in Knoxville to go to the playoff game.
Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that 5000 students do so.
If they didn’t use up their ticket allotment, what is left would be sold to the general public which makes for a little older (less loud?) crowd.

I haven’t heard or seen anywhere how many tickets are required to be given for the opposing team to sell.
Let’s just, for the sake of argument, assume that the opposing school gets 5000 and they sell them all.
And let’s assume we get one of the two night games (there is one night game on Dec 20 and one on Dec21 with the other two games at noon and 4pm on Dec21).
Let’s assume that the temperature for an 8pm at kickoff is between 35-40 degrees.

Now, for my question.
What will the environment be like ?
How loud? Like a typical SEC game against one of our rivals? Or louder?
Our fans will be all wrapped up in jackets and coats 🧥 (hopefully Orange 🍊 ones).
Clapping with gloves doesn’t make a lot of noise.
However, will we be all liquored up (think LSU Cajun level drunk) and be rowdy as drunken sailors screaming our voices raw?
Would it matter who we play? Would we be more fired up against Texas than, say, Indiana?

Oh well.
This is a great “problem” to have.
I am just so excited that we are RELEVANT again.
Thank you White, Heupel, Boyd, Donde.
Now just take care of business in Nashville on Saturday and then watch the selection show the following week to see who, when, and where we play.
This is fun, dammit! GBO!!

Wait are their people who honestly believe the student section wouldn’t be jam packed for our first ever playoff game?

This has also been a curiosity of mine ever since they released the CFP schedule. Schools in larger metro areas with large amounts of their student body being in-state (Ohio State, I assume Tennessee?) should be fine. I am fascinated to see how a school like Penn State does, it’s a ghost town in the middle of no where when students aren’t on campus.

I think you underestimate the number of students who stay in Knox during most if not all of the breaks.

Once you get passed your freshman year, you probably move out of the dorms and have somewhat of a life in Knox outside of school.

While I was a bit older when I went back to UT, I never bothered going "home" (2 hours away) until Christmas Eve or the day before

UT is 4 hours from our home. My son, will be going back just for that game at Neyland…..

if season ticket holders get their tickets, it will be a family affair as tickets and dinner for the first CFP game maybe what they get in their stockings 5 days early.

I am a season ticket holder. I contacted the ticket office last week to see how the tickets would be sold and if I would be able to purchase my tickets I have currently for any playoff game. No decision has been made, but one will come soon. I hope I can purchase my season ticket seats.

As an employee of a state school, not everyone leaves for "holidays" or breaks.

You might be surprised at the amount of students who stay (or honestly have nowhere to go)

Man, I think UT might be dropping the ball on this one. Ohio State and Penn State season ticket holders already got their seat locations and paid for their potential playoff games two weeks ago.

I don't see a scenario where we're in Athens. If Georgia wins the SECCG, they will get a bye and Texas will host a playoff game. If UGA loses, they won't drop out of the playoffs, but I think they'll fall behind us in the rankings.

The committee would have to really, really hate us to send us to Athens for the 2nd time in one season. For this reason, however, I wouldn't mind seeing Indiana, SMU, and Miami ranked ahead of Tennessee tomorrow night. The worst-case scenario for us if we don't host would be getting the 9-seed with UGA at 8. Let Indiana or the loser of the ACC championship game gave the 9 seed.

If USC beats Notre Dame, we will host regardless of what happens in Atlanta, so let's just hope for that.

Would there be student ticket allotments? I would think not. I imagine they would be able to sell those tickets at a premium. With no school in session, I'm not sure they'd offer student tickets, but perhaps I'm wrong.

For students living off campus, it won't be a problem for them to come back for the weekend. The dorms will be closed, so there will be an issue for those students. Most students can't get on-campus housing after their freshman year so those tickets should be gone.

It's an entirely new phenomenon which has never happened before. I don't think you can assume that students won't attend the very first ever playoff game in Neyland Stadium.

There's no data to support them just leaving since they have never had a reason to stay in Knoxville in the past.
I hung around for the Volunteer Classic basketball tournament in 1977. Just saying

I'm hoping for the same thing - priority order though for now is

1. Beat Vandy
2. Make the Playoffs
3. Hopefully end up hosting - This is going to take some luck as I feel we still will be positioned out of a hosting spot.

They are confident at this point that they are hosting ... but stranger things have happened.

No team in the country wants to come to Neyland for a playoff game. This will be 2015 Oklahoma Loud.
oh, it’ll be much worse than that.
It’s almost going to be criminally unfair.

It’ll literally be the biggest game in the history of Neyland.
Just beat Vandy’s brains in first!
