I thought House of Cards was absurd in season 1 too. The whole plan of using Peter Russo to get to the White House was just as absurd as the scheme in season 2.
House of Cards wants to be like Breaking Bad, the Wire, Mad Men, or the Sopranos, but subjectively it isn't the best show on it's own streaming service (I would give that to Orange is the New Black). I have two major problems with House of Cards. First of all the writers have no idea how to write a scheme that could actually work in the real world (hence the absurdity). Second the main characters are un-redeemable. There is nothing human about Frank unlike other TV anti-heroes (Walter White, Tony Soprano, Stringer Bell). It wouldn't be so bad if there was someone for Frank to truly play off of (like Hannibal plays off Will Graham), but they are just tossed off the show (literally). The only time Frank came across as human was when he went back to his school in season 1. Speaking of which the bi side of Frank was handled in a believable way in that episode, but how it was handled in season 2 was just ridiculous (it felt so tacked on to shock us).
Also Kevin Spacey is a fine actor, but he comes across as a cartoon villain in House of Cards. I dare say he gives the worst performance on the show.
