Been a Coach K assistant for years. Chris Collins is turning things around at Northwestern. If we're going to wind up taking a flyer on a coach, might as well get one from a productive coaching tree. I'd be happier with that than some Stan Heath/Cuonzo Martin mid-major flash in the pan.

Thoughts?

I'd rather see someone like Lawrence Frank, who was reassigned within the nets organization by Jason Kidd. That is, if Pearl is not an option.

I would say there is a better option somewhere. Somewhere in Knoxville even that works for HT Hackney.

Coach K is 67. Wojo is coach in waiting and a Duke legend.

If he left to go anywhere, as soon as Coach k retired, he would be called for the Duke job

I want a coach who believes Tennessee is a career job, not a career builder.

Yeah Bruce Pearl proves that. If you asked what coach in the history of ever that you would want a disciple of. I bet ZERO would say get someone who learned under DR. Tom Davis of Iowa who Pearl learned from. Coaching good/bad is relevant to only the coach involved. Not who they studied under. Even though its a different sport, look at how many coaches have failed once they left learning under Saban.

I'd say that criteria effectively eliminates 99% of the potential candidates. Bruce or bust. This should be interesting.

I think Wojo would be a good coach, but what makes you think he could recruit.

my 2 cents

The head basketball coach’s extension tacks on a year to the life of the contract, taking it through the 2021-2022 season. This is critical for Mick Cronin’s ability to recruit at Cincinnati. High school prospects want to ensure that when they sign with a program their coach will be there for the longevity of their eligibility with the team. Coaches target and begin talking to players sometimes as early as their sophomore or junior year of high school. So keeping a contract at around 6-7 years long lessens the likelihood of Cronin being axed by UC* while he is playing for the Bearcats.

*This would never happen. UC loves Mick and visa versa. But it’s good for the high school players to see that mutual commitment in writing.

If Lance’s tweets hold true, Mick Cronin will make roughly $1 million more in his new contract than the last time he signed an extension. Bringing the UC head coach up to the $2 million club is critical for Bearcats basketball. In the simplest of terms, this pay bump makes it that much more expensive for other schools to poach Cronin from Cincinnati. Now, we all know he’s worth that money and more, but most schools won’t take that risk.

Still, while throwing money at Mick will certainly keep him happy and ensure he won’t leave Cincinnati if a more perfect job comes along, this is but one task among many that Bohn needs to accomplish on the basketball side. He still needs to address the outdated arena issue and give the UC head coach and his staff a larger recruiting budget. But if this news today is any indication, the new Cincinnati athletic director more than understands the situation at hand and will do what it takes to fulfill those needs for Mick Cronin.

2.13.2014 UPDATE: Per Fox19′s Joe Danneman, President Santa Ono and the UC Board of Trustees were well on their way to awarding Mick Cronin with a raise and extension before Bohn arrived at Cincinnati. So they should receive much of the praise for this smart and generous decision.

That's so short-sighted, IMO.

We have no money, so who that is proven would fit the bill?

Pearl is a pipe dream. As EMain pointed out in another thread, that Show Cause doesn't expire until late August. Just doesn't add up.

So, you want a proven coach we can afford and that the fan base would be happy with. Name them.

Which is why I say they could hire Tony Jones or Mark Pancratz as interims which would let recruits know who the hire will be so come to Tennessee.
