I have friends who love it and I've tried to watch it but I just can't get into to it. I'm not hating on it, my aunt is Mark Martin's ex-girlfriend. How can I get into it? I want to like it but it seems like watching cars go in circles and every now and then there is a big wreck and that's about it. Sometimes it shows the crew changing tires or something but that's about it.

I don't go out of my way to watch NASCAR because I prefer world-class driving skill to take center stage, but it's got all the same stuff I like about F1: Tire/fuel/pit strategies. It really only takes a couple races to figure out, so do that, pick a driver, and see if you like it.

When I do watch, I usually go for Biffle and Kahne, the two PNW guys in the Sprint Cup, and Kahne's with Red Bull/Toyota.

Play some racing games first so you can get past the retarded stage of "ALL THEY DO IS TURN LEFT LOLOLOLOLOLOL". It amazes me that people can seriously just look at it and say that and walk away without knowing how retarded that statement is. If you can't get past that stage (which, sadly, I believe that's true), then ****.

if you think there aren't world class drivers in NASCAR you're kidding yourself.

How can I get into it?

Saying "all they do is go in circles and turn left" is a product of ignorance of the sport in most cases. It is the equivalent of describing football as "all they do is line up and jump into a big pile"

If one is seriously interested in "getting into NASCAR", going to a race is about as good advice I can give.

I agree. I used to despise racing until I got a job near the fairgrounds speedway here in Nastyville. The sound of the cars practicing was all it took for me to dig it. I lost that job because everytime the cars took to the track I came down with an illness and had to leave. NASCAR is cool on tv, it flat out rocks live.

Are the races fun because of the tailgating and hot chicks or is it just a lot more fun to watch the cars in person? And what about that makes it funner? I would like to go to a race.

You can't get a feel for how fast the cars are going on TV. The camera is following the car around the track for TV so it looks like they're going much slower. Depending on where you sit, you feel the cars go by, the ground shakes and you feel the air coming off the cars. You get a true sense for how loud the cars are and smell them too.

It's probably like the difference between watching top fuel on tv and in person. Ish makes your eyes water.

And yes, f1 drivers are world class and nascar drivers couldn't hold their jocks.

Because you can bring your own cooler of beer into the track.

Like the other posters said, just go to a race and you will be hooked. But not Talladega, its kinda like going to see a football game with a 5000 yd long field, IMO.

So.
Not sure if I should take you serious or not....
The best way to get hooked on Nascar is to go grab you a 12 pack and attend a race. Nothing like spending the day at the track.

Once you get past the first 8 or ten drivers, the rest in F1 are really just average. There are over 20 drivers in NASCAR capable of winning. Now you will say winning in NASCAR is not an indicator of comparing to F1, but I think Montoya has given a good example of the relative levels of competition.

I've discussed it before with nascar fans and nobody changes their minds. I just prefer open wheel and think f1 drivers at the top are superior.

As for nascar, as I mentioned earlier, the teamwork and race strategy are just as good, and the relative lack of variance between cars compared to formula make for more parity and more competition which is entertaining.

You guys arguing about who is the best really need to know that there is an elite set of guys in racing that could probably drive anything anywhere, no difficulty. Outside of that, the differences in what they drive means that a comparison can't be made. I will say that NASCAR probably has three of those guys, while F1 has one, but again, because of the restrictiveness of F1 contracts, it's hard to really know.

And Montoya's lack of success has little to do with any judging. Again, this is a guy who's been in single seaters his entire career, racing mainly on road courses. It's completely different and outside of the elite few, it's too much to ask for instant success, and to be honest, he's had two wins and really should have three. He's made the Chase, too.

Those two wins also came on road courses just saying.
