How can S.C. keep their mascot?

Serious question, please keep this G-rated and set suggestive jokes aside.

Why do they have a mascot emblematic of an illegal activity? Cockfighting is not only stupid, it’s distasteful politically to fight animals (think Michael Vick), and it appeals to a heritage of ignorance that most southerners would rather forget. Besides, who wants to be known as the chickens? I have chickens and love them as pets, but there is a reason they are at the bottom of the pecking order (so to speak). Whatever history lesson SC fans can provide as explanation has been irrelevant for at least a generation.
Hawks? I like it.
Eagles? Nice.
Ravens? Cool.
Owls? Ok.
Chickens—seriously?
Fanbase just cock-sure nothing is wrong

i'm just offended that the girls at our local hooters don't look like this...
One of my good friends took his 16 year old to Hooters over here yesterday. I haven't commented on the photos...but damn, I know good and well we have some better talent than that over here. LOL

it's a reference to thomas sumter. a SC revolutionary war legend. he was compared to a fighting gamecock by the British because of how wild of an opponent he was.

Well…they’re mascot isn’t an army figure ina uniform. It’s a fighting cock. That’s be like making excuses for ole miss using the rebels and saying well…it’s not what it seems. I do think they need to do away with their silliness.

I think the only crowd larger than the "woke" crowd is the crowd to call people "woke." Unless you intended on something other than your statement. You have not called for SC to remove their mascot. You simply asked the question, why?

I have no idea why they keep the mascot. VolinSC said it was related to Revolutionary War hero Thomas Sumter. I have lived in SC for 20yrs and have more SC fans that I can count and never, ever heard this. I venture to guess that most SC fans do not know this as well. Thanks for letting me know, I plan to do more research and maybe changing my signature line.

Why not promote Thomas Sumter? He would be great mascot along with the chicken, then it all comes in context. Until I moved to SC the only "cocks" fans that I knew were immature 15yr old boys that just wanted to wear a hat that said cocks.

I am not sure most southerners want to forget certain things but definitely not continue or repeat them.

I'm offended by "Fighting Irish". Needs to be Gentlemen Irish.
I am not a ND fan even though I am Catholic. But I am proud that a sports team claims my Irish heritage and would never find it offensive like some other ethnic groups. People who have anxiety over nicknames have bigger issues to worry about. My high school are the Indians and I have always viewed it as a very positive icon for both my school and the ethnic group.

It is time to call these extremist the outliers that they are.

Tennessee uses a coonhound for Volunteers.
Alabama uses an elephant for Crimson Tide.

Try again.

This has zero to do with Tennessee football, make it go away
Gotta love how Vol fans turn on each other in defense of a rival’s mascot.
Never dreamed I’d be called woke for making fun of cockfighting.
I’m a born and bred Tennessean.
Dang, y’all sensitive.

Yeah, brother, it's not that you're making fun of the Gamecocks. That's cool and all. It's just that you used cancel culture methods to do it.

We're a hyper-politicized society these days. So much that it's not just what you say, it's how you say it.

I am not advocating for changing any mascots but do remember there are people that could be rightfully offended. Yes, some people look for ways to be offended and its wrong.

If you were from Northern Ireland and lost a loved one at the hands of the I.R.A. then yeah you could be offended by the fighting Irish. I do not think it should change anything. That person would have legitimate grounds to be offended.

Could be worse, bub. Most woke-mocking hearsay infected folks don't actually know what woke really means. And too many woke folks I've talked with don't either. There are places to get truly educated about the term and movement, but too many on both sides are too hearsay infected to look for it or even listen. Kind of like religious cults who are blindly indoctrinated into a certain dogma, and dayum facts on any and all levels.

Sensitive, no. I did not call you woke but I can see how others see it as a woke idea.

Again your thread isn't about Tennessee Vols football and this is the Tennessee Vols Football Forum. So post something about Volsball here, you'll be fine

It has nothing to do with political correctness or anything else, but I think it's really lame to have a rooster as your mascot. Never understood that one. Same with the Stanford. A tree - really?

However much I may agree with your POV, it's their school so none of our business. Most schools tend to go with a mascot with a degree of fighting spirit (reputation).

But some, who the heck knows what they were thinking at the time? St. Louis University -The Billiken Yale University - Handsome Dan
Akron University -Zippy Then there's that darn thing at WKU called Big Red I think. Yet, it all boils down to, none of our business, though
we may justifiably wonder about the sanity of their school.

Best thing about SC is the "Gamecock" statue outside the stadium. They neglected to put spurs on the rooster which means that, really, what they've got is just a statue of an angry chicken.

Totally forgot about "the giant golden cock"

Stanford went woke in the early 1970's dropping the nickname Indians in favor of Cardinal (as in the color).
