NCAA Rules Definition of a Recruited Athlete
How does the NCAA define whether a prospect is considered a recruited athlete?
A prospect is considered a recruited athlete if the college takes one of the following actions:
If they provide the prospect with an official visit.
If they have an off-campus contact with the prospect or the prospects parents or legal guardians.
If they offer the prospect a National Letter of Intent or an athletic scholarship agreement.
If they initiate a telephone conversation with the prospect or his parents or legal guardians more than one time.
Ironically, a coach can have frequent e-mail conversations with a prospect but that athlete will still not be defined as a recruited athlete if the coach does not use any of the four actions above to encourage the prospect to attend the college and join their athletic program.
Just curious, wonder if Butch Jones and staff could have frequent Skype webcam conversations with recruits and families and they still would not be considered a recruited athlete.
I don't understand where everyone is getting the '5 backcounted against 2013' bit. Rivals has us with 21 recruits for 2013, and most sources said that 5 of those were early enrollees (and presumably counted against 2012). Wouldn't that give us only 16 for the Class of 2013?
If that's the case, wouldn't we be able to take 34 without any special tricks, by simply back-counting 9 against Class of 2013?
Obviously, I'm missing something, but it seems that with the stats, we should be able to back-count more than 5.
25 per SEC rule+5 backcounted to previous years class=30 that we can take in our current recruiting class.
Then it comes down to who grey shirts, which is likely recruited players that are injured and would need an off year to get back. I'm not sure they can even use football facilities for rehab, Larry might could answer that.
Blue Shirts are players that aren't officially recruited and are a real gray area for the NCAA that will probably be addressed in the future. No official visits on campus, nor in home visits by football staff. Allowed to play and be put on scholarship in the spring also.
