How Can We Take 35?

I want a full roster.
I want a roster full of quality football players.
I want the rules to be followed.

If the staff does all of that, I don't care how they do it. Magic is fine. Strategic approach is fine. Hell, I'll even take luck.

NCAA Rules – Definition of a Recruited Athlete
How does the NCAA define whether a prospect is considered a recruited athlete?
A prospect is considered a recruited athlete if the college takes one of the following actions:
• If they provide the prospect with an official visit.
• If they have an off-campus contact with the prospect or the prospect’s parents or legal guardians.
• If they offer the prospect a National Letter of Intent or an athletic scholarship agreement.
• If they initiate a telephone conversation with the prospect or his parents or legal guardians more than one time.

Ironically, a coach can have frequent e-mail conversations with a prospect but that athlete will still not be defined as a recruited athlete if the coach does not use any of the four actions above to encourage the prospect to attend the college and join their athletic program.

Just curious, wonder if Butch Jones and staff could have frequent Skype webcam conversations with recruits and families and they still would not be considered a recruited athlete.

I think that would be all right as long as they never contacted face to face or had more than one phone call.

There is no doubt that CBJ has found a work around regarding the SEC Letter of Intent rule of 25. The new FAA agreement allows him to go to 37 IMO because of the 7 signing FAA agreements before 12/1.

The rub is with the initial counter NCAA rule. How does he count more than 30 scholarship players?? that is what needs to be determined. Fans are hanging their hats on this "blue shirt" process. What information is going to have to provided to the NCAA to show anyone they give scholarships to in August has not been recruited? IMO that will be required.

Guy`s I love this for the first time in years we are talking about ways to get our recruits in.
NOT why do we only have 10-15 recruits while everybody else has 20 or more.
NOT why are we going after players that La. Tech or others like it want.
NOT why can`t we get the best players in our own state.
NOT when are we going to get a coach who can recruit.

25 per SEC rule+5 backcounted to previous years class=30 that we can take in our current recruiting class.

Then it comes down to who grey shirts, which is likely recruited players that are injured and would need an off year to get back. I'm not sure they can even use football facilities for rehab, Larry might could answer that.

Blue Shirts are players that aren't officially recruited and are a real gray area for the NCAA that will probably be addressed in the future. No official visits on campus, nor in home visits by football staff. Allowed to play and be put on scholarship in the spring also.

I'm sure it has been explained a couple hundred times on how we are allowed to take 35 under the SEC rules. If someone could sticky that explanation or just respond here, I'd appreciate it.

11 post's down untill someone tries to answer this.....:bad:

I don't understand where everyone is getting the '5 backcounted against 2013' bit. Rivals has us with 21 recruits for 2013, and most sources said that 5 of those were early enrollees (and presumably counted against 2012). Wouldn't that give us only 16 for the Class of 2013?

If that's the case, wouldn't we be able to take 34 without any special tricks, by simply back-counting 9 against Class of 2013?

Obviously, I'm missing something, but it seems that with the stats, we should be able to back-count more than 5.

This is what I was thinking. We are not to the limit that we even need loopholes yet.

My question is.....With the 85 scholarship cap does a team have wiggle room during a recruiting cycle if they stay below the 85 cap?

We are losing alot of seniors on scholly as well as Tiny, maybe AJ, and also Dallas and Posey both left who were on scholarship. Not to mention Mo Couch who I think was a junior.

gray shirts cannot participate in any phase of the football program. cannot use the facilities or interact with players or coaches, many do not even enroll in school but sit out at home. those that enroll have to pay their own way.

Per Tennessee after signing day 2013, they had space to back count only 2 to the 2013 class. The Rivals list you are looking at does not have two late signees that UT signed, Johnathan Johnson and Kendal Vickers..

UT signed 23 last year. Lee was released and went to Temple. 2 were back counted leaving 20 in the class. We have 5 spots to back count
