On espn and other stations like Fox Sports and on radio. I know they all don't have broadcast degrees.

Because it's much easier to take someone with intricate first hand knowledge of a sport and teach them to articulate ideas and thoughts than it is to take someone with trained knowledge of communication and teach them the intricasies of a game they've never experienced.

Some through their communications degrees that they earned in college. (Blain Bishop)

Some because they have good personalities that the audience may like, thus increase the ratings of the station. (Charles Barkely)

Need to speak propery English and not broken sentences or slang words.

"A leopard never changes his stripes"....first among the litany of gems issued by a Hall of Fame warrior running back. Record holding, multiple championship winning, successful business owner who, upon retiring was snapped up immediately by a network and pushed into a plum analysis job. Was given a huge leash to settle into his job...and almost decapitated himself. Old Yellared out of that kush job...he mouth-breathed around until another network cast him in a reality dance competition...that he summarily won. Another network lands him amid the resulting clamor and he face plants again...the problem with this otherwise valiant employee is HE DON'T EXACTLY TALK...GOOD! Which is kind of what we need in this line of work Mr. Smith...Mr EMMITT SMITH ...and now you know...THE REST ...of the story.

As noted above, communications degrees and it's a popular major amongst athletes. Watch their intros at the beginning of a game where they list their name, major, etc.

As far as Barkley goes, he is entertaining at the end of the day, what goes through his mind, comes out his mouth. That's why people love him. He's not the most eloquent, but he's miles ahead of Emmitt Smith.
